[Anime] is gundam a kids show?

In Japan, as far as the public is concerned and not fans of anime, yeah, Gundam is a kids show. In the 90s it aired in the same hour as Sentai, in the early 2000s it aired in this timeslot I've seen a lot of Japanese people consider as a family/kids time slot. (I was pretty surprised when I asked a friend who lives over there who replied "Oh, yeah, that's the kiddy and teen pop music time")

I think the closest Gundam has gotten to adult content would be some of the direct to video UC stuff like the CGI Igloo series.

one piece, dbz and naruto are shounen. are you saying those are kids show. air time has nothing to do with it. one piece at at 9:30 and it is not a kid show.

Air time has everything to do with it. Of course the show that airs at 9:30 AM is a kids show. The adult and teen anime all tend to air at midnight or even later. One Piece, Dragonball Z, and Naruto are definitely kids shows - you even said it yourself when you called them shounen shows. You don't put your gritty adult anime on the air when kids are likely to be watching, even in Japan, that would get your show in trouble with a lot of parents. What passes for a kids show in Japan and in America can be vastly different, but everything you mentioned is and always has been kids programming.

Once in a while a series will get into Shounen Jump that isn't something you would traditionally think of as being a product for kids, but 95% of the stuff that comes out of there meant for kids.

has eichiro oda ever said one piece is for kids? has toriyama for dbz. kishimoto for naruto? no. they are not kids show. they are for teenagers

Anyway, those are the manga authors, not TV writers (do mangaka write TV scripts?), and they published their stuff in a magazine that literally has "kid" in the title.

Also, age ratings on US home video releases might not necessarily reflect the age rating in Japan.

i mean come on. most of the fans of these series are teenagers/adults. kids should not be watching that stuff.

What dictionary tells you that "shonen = teenagers"?

Also, I'm pretty sure Shonen Jump-based anime are popular with kids around here (I'm in Malaysia, and that's like, physically closer to Japan than a lot of other places so uh, maybe that means something?).

And fans you find on message boards or anime conventions do not represent the actual demographics of any given show, considering that children are less likely to be active on websites or be able to make the trip to a convention center.

"Shounen" means "boy". There's no going around that and the fact that they were/are serialized on "Weekly Shounen Jump", a magazine for boys.

For example, the writing on the magazine has furigana (small kana) above the kanji, so that young children who have not been that far into their kanji studies can still read them. More mature manga like seinen and josei don't have those.

shounen is for ages 13 and up. and besides bleach and yu yu hakusho were in shonen jump. are you saying those are for kids too. the stories are too complex for little kids. hunter x hunter the anime is moving to late nights and it is in shonen jump. shonen jump manga is for teens.

Yeah, I heard it was due to content; the age-rating always stayed the same, Togashi just.. is odd about what he can and can't do.

I'm not doubting you but, "Kids Station" had "kid" in the title and that aired Narutaru. :laugh:

Ive always just seen it as a "boys anime" not so much aimed at young kids but maybe 12 onwards. This could be because my first experience with Gundam was Gundam Wing when I was proberbly about 12 XD

But if you look at the original Gundam series it is very children aimed ... or at least I considered it to be.

But honestly in the Tokusatsu community does it really matter who its aimed at? if you enjoy it you enjoy it!
