How many episodes do you burn in one DVD?

I have a feeling I'm not in the right thread...but there's no other thread to categorize this so I'm posting here.

This might be a pointless thread to some of you guys but oh well.

I'm planning on burning some sentai/power rangers encodes on DVD. But I'm also thinking about how many episodes I should put in one disk. The burning program I have is Nero 6. The maximum number of episodes (avi files that are 640x480) that I can put into one DVD are 4. But when I change the resolution of these files to 320 x 240 using Vdub I can actually fit up to 8 episodes. If I burn 8 episodes into one disc, I would have less discs for one season. But what I'm also concerned is the quality of the video after it is burned.

Now I'm asking you guys for your opinion if you've ever burned any tv show on DVD. How many episodes do you guys usually put into DVD?

6 episodes per disc is what my bro does, idk what he uses, but they're great quality.

the DVD's I burn vary from 5 episodes to a disc to 20 episodes to a disc, I used to burn 20 episodes to a disc just because it saved money but I originally thought that would mean it lacked on quality, but when I burned Kamen Rider Kabuto to DVD (5 episodes per disc) the quality was worse than my faiz dvd's (which is 20 episodes per disc, the last disc has 10 episodes on, the movie and hyper battle video) so I guess if your gonna burn to DVD, its really up to you.

I personally find burning 13 episodes to one DVD gives the best result :thumbs:

if your intrested in the software I use its TMPGEnc, although when it comes to the final burn I use Nero.

The two biggest things to consider are:
a) how much you can afford to spend on blank DVDs and whether they're readily available/affordable where you live
b) the actual filesizes of the videos you have. The larger the filesize, the fewer eps you'll be able to fit.


Now, considering that you said the files you have are 640x480, and that you can only burn 4 eps per disc, that leads to 3 possible conclusions:
a) the files you get are rougly 1GB in size (which would meant insane video/audio quality)
b) you're acutally only burning them on CD-ROMs and not DVD-ROMs
c) you are leaving a LOT of unused/empty/wasted space on your discs when you burn them.


I DL the TVN subbed episodes. The way they encode, it gives the eps a filesize of approximately 240MB. That means that on a 4.5GB (single layer) DVD disc you can burn a max of approximately 18 episodes.

Now, despite what some people may think or say, the number of files you burn on a disc actually does NOT affect the quality of the actual files. In other words, burning fewer eps on a disc will NOT lead to better quality eps nor does burning more eps necessarily lead to a deterioration in quality. The video quality of an episode depends on the encode, the fact that it gets burned onto a disc has no effect on it.

As long as you keep your burned discs in good condition and you take care of them, then you have nothing to worry about. The only way your videos will deteriorate in quality once they've been burned is if you don't take care of the discs.

The discs that I have are DVDs. When I burn 4 640x480 episodes using Nero, the bar at the bottom that shows how much space is used actually fills up to almost 4.7 GB, which I also do not understand. The files I burn are about 240mb in size like you said, but I still don't get why it reached almost 4.7 GB in the bar. And when I add more files, Nero says I reached the maximum capacity and it gives me an option if I should reduce the quality to fit into disc (I tried that before and the quality of the final product was bad and choppy) or use a DVD-9 instead and then burn it, but I only have the 4.7GB discs.

I do have a screenshot of the program to show you what I mean. Here's the screenshot of Nero when I was working on my Digimon Data Squad disc. The episodes are very much the same file size as the sentai/power ranger encodes but the resolution is slightly different.

As you can see, when I added an extra episode it goes over the maximum capacity of the disc. But when I shrink the res I can fit up to 8 episodes, but the quality would not be as good as the original. Can anyone explain why it is like this? Does anybody have Nero that experiences the same thing like me?

BTW, what program do you use to burn that'll let you fit 18 episodes?

Keep in mind, the format of video and software compression you do. I've learned this myself while burning things to DVD, the blank DVD itself has to be decent quality at least. I prefer finding high-grade software that normally needs to be bought, looking for a free hacked version of it, if you cant, just buy the version and make use of it.

I don't think DVD quality goes down when you add more files...I think. I believe it's all in the compression and quality of the source video.

Thanks for the link, but when I click it I get the "page not available" message. If you still have it, try reuploading it to a public server like ImageShack. It'll definitely give a better idea of what's going on.


If the filesizes are the same size (around 240MB), then you should be able to fit way more episodes per disc than the 4 that you're saying you're getting.

But yeah, if you could repost that screenshot it would help a lot. Take one where you show the 4 eps/disc so we can see the status bar at the bottom of the NERO window. :thumbs:

As you can see, I've got 18 episodes in my "to burn" list on the left-hand side of the screen. With the exception of Eps. 13 & 14, they're all around 240MB each, and I'm totalling just under 4.25GB.

And yes, I rename my files when I burn them, big deal. I DL them straight from TV-N's tracker, and I never share them with anyone. They're for my personal use once they're burned, so nyah nyah.
