How do you handle character deaths in Long-Term Campaigns?

I've recently been running a long-term D&D campaign, and we've had a few character deaths that affected the party's dynamics quite a bit. Some players were really invested in their characters, and it felt tough to navigate those moments without derailing the whole story. How do you handle character deaths in your campaigns while keeping the game engaging and ensuring it doesn't lead to player frustration? Any tips or examples from your experiences would be appreciated! Qapla'!

Character deaths can be such a double-edged sword in long-term campaigns. I really appreciate the emotional weight they bring, especially when players are invested in their characters. I once had a player who was totally committed to their paladin, and when they fell in battle, the mood shifted dramatically; the tension among the party was palpable. On one hand, I think it's a great opportunity for character growth and role-playing, but if not handled carefully, it can definitely lead to frustration, especially if a player feels like their character wasn't given a fair shot. What I've done is introduce a system where the party can have a chance to rescue or honor the fallen character through quests or rituals. Have you tried any specific strategies that worked for your group?
