How did Slumdog Millionare win best picture?

Slumdog Millionaire was a really good movie and it did deserve best picture. It something new and fresh that has not been done before which it really pulled off into an excellent film.

Now Poweranimals are you seeing the negativity in it because it won best picture like so many do with the best picture winners that sweep awards (because they have some childish need to hate the mainstream?), or were you (unlikely according to your post) able to block out everything while watching it and not thinking its a Best Picture and just watch it for what it is and then form your opinion?

Its a spectacular, well written movie, not exactly deserving of sweeping the awards like it did but deserving of its Best Picture nomination and high recognition at the least.

Seriously most film guys knew Slumdog was going to sweep many award shows.

it's just a movie about nothing in your life will work out and then you'll die.

That's a theme thats interesting to me but not a valid reason to judge the quality of a film. If the theme was delivered poorly then its justified if you word it with that. Granted I never saw Million Dollar Baby.

If you guys want to actually discuss this one, I'm down for it, but I'm not really judging Million Dollar Baby on a objective level. It's a movie about how shitty life is and how it never changes, and I don't believe that at all. In fact, I believe the opposite entirely. So that's why I hated it.

Also, it feels like Clint Eastwood's Old Man and the Sea - i.e. written just to win an award.

I never thought of it like that though. yes you CAN take the context of the ending might mean that but overall I thought of the overall theme of the movie was that, no matter what, never give up on your dream. at the end, maggie was paralyzed, she was a cripple, yet there was nothing for her to be ashamed of. the euthanasia scene could be concidered bleak but, at the end, she had done what she always wanted to do, she did what she desired to do. she is granted her rest.

but I am a bit biased, it's one of my fave modern movies and I do love bleak movies myself. different strokes for different folks really.

Crash played to raw emotion in such a way that it evoked real emotion. Like the scene where the cop thought his dauhghter was killed. That got an honest emotion out of my cynicall old man

And when I say the hero's story, I mean the fact that a kid managed to go from being nobody, and having to fight against the darkness in the world around him to becoming a millionaire, gaining respect, and finding the woman he loves despite all these hardships. It's like Aurthur finding the sword, Rockefeller gaining his fortune, Clinton coming to office (before certain things). The fact that he did it nonviolently only makes him a more compelling lead

I wasn't even expecting to love it or anything. Based on the description, it seemed like it would be at least entertaining. There wasn't anything playing that I really wanted to see. So it was just a "Well it won an Oscar for best picture. How bad can it be?" experience. And there were interesting parts but for the most part I was bored. It just felt like they were just trying to show us how poorly kids are treated in other countries. Which I'm not exactly unaware of but I was there to be entertained, not recieve a guilt trip.

People keep saying it was well written but was so "well written" about it. I'll admit they were pretty clever with the pacing but I couldn't bring myself to care about the story outside the actual "Who Wants to Be a Millionare" competition which I could've just watched on TV.
