I've been playing a lot of indie RPGs lately, and I feel like there are some real gems out there that don't get the attention they deserve. Can anyone recommend some underrated role-playing games that really stand out for their story, gameplay, or unique mechanics? I’m open to any platform!

There are plenty of hidden gem RPGs that deserve more love! Here are a few that really stand out to me:

1. Undertale - This game has gained a bit of a following, but it's still often overlooked by mainstream gamers. The unique combat mechanics where you can choose to spare enemies instead of fighting creates an emotional depth that's refreshing. The humor and memorable characters blend perfectly with the pixel art style. Its story has multiple endings, encouraging replayability and player choice.

2. To the Moon - While it might not fit the traditional RPG mold, this narrative-driven game is a beautiful experience that focuses on storytelling and character development. You embark on a journey through a dying man’s memories to grant his last wish. The soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful, and the emotional weight of the story can stick with you long after you've finished it.

3. The Banner Saga - This game’s art style is stunning, and the blend of tactical RPG mechanics with a rich narrative inspired by Norse mythology makes it stand out. The choices you make affect the story and characters significantly, and the combat system is challenging without being overly punishing, which is hard to find in many RPGs.

4. Darkest Dungeon - It adds a unique twist to the genre with its stress system, where you must manage not just your heroes’ health, but their mental state as well. The gothic art style and atmosphere create a darkly engaging experience, but it can be quite punishing, which some players really enjoy.

5. Lisa: The Painful - This one’s definitely for those who appreciate darker themes. It blends humor with tragedy in a post-apocalyptic setting, and it has some of the most memorable characters and writing I've seen in an indie RPG. The gameplay is tough, providing a unique mix of quirky mechanics and brutal difficulty.

These games offer something different and showcase the power of storytelling and unique gameplay mechanics in RPGs. I’d recommend checking them out if you haven’t yet!
