Help Support Indie American Tokusatsu!

Also thanks for the good luck Shuuyu - if all goes to plan i'll b doing what we call a 'sandwich' degree here in the UK, which would give me a years placement at Ubisoft, Rareware or Lionshead before my final year of studying.

So i'd already have entry level games industry experience on my resume.

Actually, I'm from the UK, I just haven't updated my location since I got back

Whereabouts are you doing it? Be warned, not everybody gets placements and even if you do, you could basically can end up with a year of doing absolutely nothing.

Unfortunately, you'd be surprised at the moment how that makes little difference. The industry has a massive turn around in the past year or so.

Yeah, doesn't help with the Tories taking away the tax incentives for games design companies that labour were going to put in place.

--anyway i'll probably be doing it at Teeside University in the North East, making the closest studio Ubisoft Reflections (Newcastle). I added you on AIM by the way -we could discuss this there as not to clog up this thread.

Chiming in again.

Let's not talk about Office Man. That was made in like, a few hours back when I had no idea how to use FCP. In fact, that was a great excuse to learn, haha. Dai totally trumped me on that and it's still a wonder how it got the votes it did at the time. I guess going the ridiculous comedy route was worth it. But these days, Office Man is certainly not indicative of the work I've done. Haha. Though I lean more toward the journalism side these days.

Look buddy. Your pitch video is weak, the terms you use to sell your film are weak. You are incapable of receiving criticism and remind me of someone similar from the martial arts stunt community who drove himself into a corner because of the same exact personality traits. You clearly lack the ability to see the useful criticism people have given you, instead choosing to make it seem as though everyone is attacking you and 'misunderstanding' your ideas and goals.

That FX thread was FILLED with useful information which you chose to ignore. It's that simple.

Again, I'd give my money to Dai or Jay in a heartbeat because they've proven to me that they can do cool things on small/non-existent budgets. You've done nothing but argue, proving to me you don't have the chops to attack something like this any time soon.

And yes, I think those other videos are entirely tasteless and I find it hilarious that you have those videos up when you're trying to find potential investors. Woops.

BAI BAI.

I wanna make a Tokusatsu as well. Give me money. :169:

But seriously, you're 27 dude. Just work. It cost me 100,000 yen (about $1000 US) to make my Gun Caliber suit so all I did was work my ass off for a month to earn the dough.

Simply put, if the people here are reluctant to back you up, you're just gonna have to do it yourself. That's what I did. I didn't ask for anyone's help on this board.

I worked, saved up, taught myself how to sculpt and mold, and then made myself a superhero.

As for my movie, it's already been shot and edited. The whole production pretty much took 2-3 years to finish, but it feels so good to have accomplished it.

If you're as passionate as you say you are, all the stuff these people say here shouldn't effect you at all. Hell, it should fuel you to make this thing even more. Although, I honestly do think that you're in over your head. :redface2:

...And here you have a "film maker". I don't even have to watch your movie/short. Well done. :buttrock:

The reason I'm uninterested in continuing to post here is because this has turned into a e-peen contest of who can do what.

I had tried to avoid that happening but since you've decided it already is, who am I to deny you?

For example, Daikamonohashi lecturing me on video production and how this genre can be done effectively with less than $1,000 ...

I still stand by that statement and have as much right to do so as you do to insist you can make something decent with $1000 to $6000 when all of your work to date is mediocre at best. The difference is that I'm not begging other people for money, so I don't have to prove it to my audience until I'm good and ready.

when he's yet to make any video with a coherent story, intelligible audio or lighting the damn thing so there isn't huge grain pixelation on every shot.

Am I over-reacting?
No. Even you said this was his best film to date.

I have crappy, hastily-created game reviews that have more thought put into them, demonstrate more technical prowess and (most importantly) possess a narrative to maintain the audience's attention span.

Hell, I have a hastily made review of the original Ultraman series that has both better lighting and audio than the best effort Daikamonohashi has made on his fan films of Ultraman.

...your own finished and unfinished productions; none of which are representative of what I'm trying to do and are actually of worse quality than the body of work I've created without any assistance.

I rest my case. I think the images speak for themselves but I'll let the audience be the judge and jury.

Which, if you think makes me a ripoff demonstrates you do not know much about film-making http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomageShot

Okay, three things:

1.) I wasn't talking about your direction style. I was talking about the writing, which directly apes not the humor 'style,' but the jokes themselves of Scott Pilgrim. Do you think changing it from "a magical land called Toronto, Canada" to "a magical land called San Antonio, Texas" suddenly makes it a different joke? That opening line sets the tone for the entire piece and it's not a pleasing one.

2.) So what, when people are walking out of the art theater in droves asking for their money back because your villain is a shameless ripoff of Dr. Evil and they saw all these jokes on Family Guy last week, are you going to stand outside the theater accosting people and telling them IT'S NOT A RIPOFF IT'S AN HOMAGE?

3.) If you do that, I hope to god you'll direct people to a slightly more professional source than TV Tropes to explain the term to them. Because when I see a guy linking to TV Tropes to try to explain how filmmaking works, my first thought is not "professional filmmaker." It's "4chan lamer with a camera."

And you know, maybe there are enough easily amused 4chan Scott Pilgrim/Toku fans with large disposable incomes who still think the mere mention of the Power Glove is funny, and maybe if you pester them long enough you'll eventually work your way up to that $1000. Just remember that you are competing for their donation with about a hundred other webcomics, fan films, and professional projects that scratch that itch in exactly the same way, and may also provide something fresh in the bargain.

If you want to impress people so that they give you money, I beg you, show them something, anything original. It can be a joke or a character or just a method of interaction between the characters. Something fresh to make them go "ah!" and want to see more. Then make that your pitch piece. Maybe you have all kinds of crazy awesome ideas for later scenes in your project, but none of that matters if we don't see them! No one is going to pay to see a mish-mash of things they've seen before just because it's more convenient to have their Power Rangers and their Scott Pilgrim and their Nostalgia Critic all in one place. And right now, that's all you're selling.

The less said about the constructive criticism/hypercriticism thing, the better. You could be any damn whiner artist on FF.net or DeviantArt right now, which would be funny if you weren't also asking people for large sums of money under the banner "support indie Tokusatsu."

Support indie Tokusatsu? I'm all for it. Support this project? No thanks.

I'll take and order of tokusatsu with a side of seriousness, please. Thank you. Hold the 'tarded jokes. I want tokusatsu , not a comedy. But that's me.

Not referring to the 'thread project' either, just making a general statement.

Hey, Ryukendo, Go-Onger and Den-O are great (and hilarious) !
So lets not knock comedy Tokusatsu. :P (Just Gkaiser)

The support for western Tokusatsu (which doesn't suck) here is amazing though. I remember a tokuesque show was going to be made on BBC3 but it got pulled at the last second. Shame because I really enjoyed the first episode (although I've forgotten the title now)

We can talk about Indie Tokusatsu here right? Other than that GKaiser thing. I mean, that's what the thread title implies?

Phoo Action? That pilot was fucking brilliant.

Since more and more Indie-Toku threads are popping up around here, I think it'd be great if they maybe got their own forum at some point. With this thread stickied at the top, of course, as an example of what not to do! Maybe that would help prevent future Hunties and JFreedans from arising. Entertaining as they may be, the world could stand fewer.

The only major downside is it might get shoved down to the bottom of the forum and forgotten.
