Happy Holidays VS Merry Christmas

I'm not really talking about the other person's feelings in this case. I'm just talking about what you would say, from the point of view of what you think is right or appropriate.

If you knew a person who didn't celebrate Christmas, even if they weren't particularly bothered by it, would you still greet them with "Merry Christmas"?

I would just say Hello. Like I said before.

I think we need a new term for these type of issues, for now I will just call them "asshole issues". Let me explain myself. These are just greetings, most people don't really see either one as having much significance behind them. They are just being friendly. Also I would bet my life that if most people were told by the person receiving party that they don't celebrate Christmas they wouldn't care and just wish them whatever.

This is an "asshole issue" because if you honestly believe this is an issue you are being an asshole. Again I would bet my life that a vast majority of people by saying either one is not trying to push any type of preference onto you, religious or otherwise. People say Merry Christmas because it is a major holiday celebrated by a large segment of the population. People say Happy Holidays because in addition to Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza there is New Year's. Obviously people are going make assumptions but I am positive if asked a vast majority will be happy to response accordingly. When you are trying to turn people being friendly to one another into some culture war you are just an asshole.

EDITED

I just saw people talking about, and it seemed like a topic to discuss. But what ever.:redface2:

Gee thanks. Some one told me this would either get trolls or people looking to flame. Thanks for proving them right I guess, that makes me feel so CHEERY. Hey can you piss in my root beer now?

Sounds like you are taking his words too personally, Drakkhenden.

What? This isn't important, no one even gave any thought to this a decade ago. It came about because one day someone needed something to get people riled up. By continuing to even entertain this as anything even approaching meaningful you are perpetuating a cycle of manufacture controversy. All this is an excuse for people to get angry about something.

Dude, people on this board regularly throw giant rage fits about things way more trivial than this. Who are you to judge a person for what gets under their skin?

I just don't mean on this board, I mean in the wider culture. Every year this comes up, taking attention away from actual news. I admit I am a bit of a dick, but some discussions just need to die.

I edited that post for a reason. I thought I had over reacted to you. I guess I didn't. It was something to discuss. Thank you for showing me that creating threads here is a BAD idea. Feel free to go make some one else feel like **** now. :redface2:

Harsh, maybe. That doesn't make it any less true.

Getting offended by a simple gesture of good will is something an asshole would do.

He was saying that anyone that even brought it up is an asshole. I decided to make a thread to discuss this. I know now not to make threads around here anymore. If you do, you get people like him jumping your ****.

It wasn't something that got under my skin. I just thought it was an interesting topic for a discussion. Then you have him come along and start that crap. I'll just go back to lurking again for a while.
