This is from Mado King Granzort made by Sunrise in the early 90's. This one is the mech Rabi's mother Sayuri uses when she goes by the alias of Kuromusha. I bet the Gurren Lagann staff were fans.

Oh wow, thats pretty cool, I noticed that the show was inspired by a number of ol shows but never knew where the face concept came from, and now I also know why GL's helmet never got fixed XD
