Speaking of Seven. I heard that the original show was pretty damn good. I have not been able to find any episodes yet, sadly... But I wonder, is it as good as people say it is?
Mind you, I don't give a damn about effects and such. I am a major lover of Showa shows. I am thinking more in terms of storyline. I heard the story of Seven was pretty deep compared to the other Ultra shows back then.
It's definitely my favorite Ultra series, followed by Tiga and Max (and Dyna, though in a different way than the others.) Max wins at having my single favorite episode of Ultraman... but even that involves something from Seven.
I think it's playing to a different audience than most series from that time period though, which is probably why, on original broadcast, it apparently wasn't held in the same regard it often is now. If you go in expecting all-out action, you do get that, sometimes. There are many conflicts solved by Seven and friends blasting the hell out of everything, and some truly awesome fights.
In others episodes though, it's more about what the story has to say. There's one that springs to mind where all Seven really does in it is fly out of a ship that's about to crash. But it's not so much about fighting the big ol alien as it is about who the alien is, why he's on earth, and how he's representing the rest of his species. The show manages to keep my attention even though it doesn't end with a real fight scene (it does have a big explosion though.) I think it does get ahead of its time a lot- there's another episode basically suggesting that
[HIDE]humans were originally alien invaders to the Earth[/HIDE]
and if there's a bigger self-questioning of the very concept of Ultraman, I'm not sure I want to see it. And all this comes after an episode where the good guys fight with Kappa aliens who run really fast and eat chickens. I love this show.
I need to watch it again, now that I've had the cheapo re-releases sitting on my shelve for a few months. It's a good one. Check it out.
