I also got a lot of Machine Robo vibes (the 80s series, not Rescue) from the dynamic between the girl, the guy, and the girl's robot protector. I'm familiar with Ga-Keen but I haven't actually seen any episodes of it, so the combination sequence just made me think of Aquarion (more's the pity).
I thought there were some awkward aspects to the show; the cartoony character designs don't entirely work for me during the dramatic scenes (though I love them during the high school scenes), and I think the team's struggling a little bit to write dialogue to reflect the insane goings-on that doesn't sound completely stupid when spoken aloud in English. I also thought there was a lot of exposition that didn't need to be there (did we need three minutes of technobabble explaining how the combination works?) But that could also just be a factor of trying to introduce the foreign concepts to an audience that's not very used to them.
But there was also a lot to like. For one, I have to say I think it's awesome that an American is making a robot show where we can throw out possible inspirations as being Grendizer, Ga-Keen and Machine Robo. The high school sequence was great. The interplay between the more traditional military faction and the super-secret-l33t military faction seems like it could have interesting consequences.
All in all, I think it has potential and it will just depend on how it goes from here. I do think there's more precedent these days for kid's shows to keep up a running plot, so I don't think he'll be obligated to keep it in the episodic ghetto that Samurai Jack was forced into. I wouldn't even mind if it was more like Sentai, with basically episodic storytelling that nevertheless builds to interesting climaxes every couple of episodes.
