Egyptian President has stepped down!

I remain cautiously optimistic. Like others, I only really know what's been reported and have to interpret information as I receive it. That said, I'm not naive enough to believe it'll be all rosy and shiny. Depending on which channel you watch it'll either mean status quo, true democracy, utter chaos, or unification in the single goal of destroying every neighbor and the western world. Problem is, or not depending on where you stand, is that either of these scenarios could happen. No one at the time it was happening knew how their conflicts would turn out: the American Revolution, the Civil War, Spanish/American war, War of 1812, or World Wars 1, 2, Vietnam, Korea, or Iraq. Also, any conflict with a people and it's ruling body is a crap shoot. Sometimes things could go either way and hinge on pivotal moments for one side to become victorious.

There's something to be said about democracy being considered the highest form of government, in error.

Its wonderful idea that the Egyptian people stood up for what they believe in in order to stage such a revolution. Its beautiful, but just because it is doesnt mean that that beauty can not be spoiled. I dont know much about the situation of Egypt, I don't live there, and relying on the media or wikipedia doesnt make you well informed to make a judgement call, but to be honest just because they are free it doesnt mean things will go great. History can tell us other wise.

What this revolution has done has left a vacuum of power, and lets be honest that vacuum will pull in anybody who wants to fill it. The Egyptian people can only hope that it isnt filled by something bad.

Now I'll admit that I'm not very well up on my history, but has a military-run country ever ended well? This just seems like we're trading a bad situation for an unfavorable one.

You mean besides the United States?
Scott Simon of NPR had some great commentary on this today. Give it a read or listen.

Quick excerpt:
The American Revolution triumphed with General George Washington's victory at Yorktown in 1781. Throughout history, a lot of conquering heroes—Caesar, Bonaparte, Castro and Mugabe — have used great victories to seize power.

But George Washington went home to Mt. Vernon and farmed.

We can only hope and encourage that Egypt's military follows Washington's lead.

Edit: Hey, not to be a jerk, but can Sentinel King or a mod please fix the thread title so that it is in proper English? A thread about something so important shouldn't make the board look bad to new visitors. Simple fix would be: "Egyptian President has stepped down!"
