Editorial on the sate of the anime industry

Neither Gonzo nor BONES is young at this point. Gonzo is roughly 15 years old, BONES roughly ten. Both studios were founded by industry veterans who were ready to go their own way (of GAINAX and Sunrise, respectively).

Personally I feel Gonzo deserves no support whatsoever, because the studio was founded for abominable reasons. The founders of Gonzo left GAINAX explicitly because they felt GAINAX was missing out on commercial opportunities by refusing to produce more shows per season at lower levels of quality.

Gonzo occasionally produces a classy series every now and then, but if you look at the bulk of its production credits it's trashy, poorly-made series of the sort that helped ignite the now-embarrassing boom for anime that run on pure crass fanservice.

I feel BONES does deserve fan support, but international licensing brings pride and prestige to a studio. BONES's success with officially licensed versions of its products in the West has helped keep the studio alive. If you support officially licensed Fullmetal Alchemist or other BONES projects in the US, you are supporting BONES just as much as if you buy Japanese-made goods.

um a studio that is younger than i am is not old is Tatsunoko or toei or Sunrise so bones and Gonzo are young in my eyes no more of the money goes in Funi or the license holders if you buy the stuff in the us

Could you try and make that make a little more sense please?

more money would go to the Us license Than the Source studio when the DVD gets slod in the us so if you want to keep Gonzo and bones alive bones with it's over 30000000 YEN debt and Gonzo even worse of than that i known this cause both of these Studios are Stock listed Companies that i own stock in so i known the problems that they are having

This is not how it works. If you truly own stock in these companies, it is to your advantage to support legal international distribution.

When a US license holder arranges a deal with a company like Gonzo or BONES for Western release, a large licensing fee is paid to the company up front. The US licensor then turns a profit if they're able to successfully market DVDs and merchandise for the property in the US. IIRC, most contracts have a proviso that sends royalties to the Japanese producer if the property generates more than a certain amount of money.

So if you do not support FUNimation and other US licensors, you are directly taking money out of Japanese producer's profits. FUNi cannot pay large sums of money up front to studios like Gonzo and BONES if their US releases are not selling to North American citizens.

Western licensing fees can be extremely lucrative. I am not sure how representatives of either company would feel about a stockholder publicly stating that they do not want them to receive international licensing fees and, presumably, that they do not want their products airing on American television.

no if is own by funimation download the fansubbed stuff i hate Funi so god dam much ripping down all they licensed stuff
hurt funimation support the Japanese Industry Gonzo is about to if stuuf is owned my Gonzo or Studio bones IMPORT to help two young anime studios survive

Do you even understand that if you don't support the licensees you are still hurting the Japanese creators. They make money off of licensing their stuff to other countries. That money is used to make new stuff. I think it's really lame to support ripping off legit licensed anime. By supporting the companies that license gonzo and bones anime, you are supporting those companies. There is nothing wrong with Funi. They do subbed dvds, and dubs as well. You have a backwards way of thinking on this.

i Know someone who is is a lawyer in the industry and he has took me to some of his negotiations and the main thing that hold most deals up is who s gets what for international DVD sales and the Japanese studios get one average 12.5% of the profit that not even say $90000 per annum and with DVD sales going down they get less and less but if you Import the Japanese studio gets 100% of what you spend so that's about say closer to 20 times the amount they would get from Licensed dvd sales the western anime licensors do not handles Blu rays iv just ordered the complete zeta and zz Blu ray sets from bandai Visuals Emotion club costing 70000 yen and all that money goes right to Sunrise so what gives the Japanese studios more money my way or yours

First if your lawyer friend is real, taking a third party into contract negotiations is really unprofessional and will probably (and should) get him fired. Second what market is there for region locked DVDs in most cases without foreign sub-titles? Third basically your entire argument suffers from a complete lack of the understanding of how a company or a product enters a foreign market. Not saying I know all that much, but enough to know that yours is short sighted.

And of course you're not factoring in the manufacturing costs for the discs, cases, the distribution costs, the costs for the employee wages to make those products, and all other overhead required. You're looking at about 20-30% profit off of that sale, for 100x more work on their part than signing a paper for licensing. Fact is. it's less expensive for the companies to license out their products.

do you known how much most non chief animators get paid in Japan not alot a
some even bigger studios dont get paid enough to make the rent each month
disk cost about $5 if not less dollars to make even with the say 15 to 20% loss the Japanese Studios still make a bout 80 to 85 percent on sales if imported
compere to if a licensed dvd gets slid they get 12.5 to maybe 15% max of the unit sales price your not taking all figures in to account
since when was 12 .5 bigger than 80 so they make less but more percentage no for example ponyo made 160 million gross in japan and also made close to 400 million in dvd sales in Japan and thought imports while in the us it made 15 million gross and not even 2 in dvd sales so were did ghibi make more money

Sorry gonna call shennanigans on this one. No lawyer would take 3rd party outsider to talks like that. It just isn't happening. Before you start making stuff up to go along with your backwards way of thinking on this issue, maybe you should get your REAL facts together.
