Dumb Question

I only ever consider Japanese special effect shows tokusatsu, american special effect shows I just call sci-fi or fantasy shows. It's like the difference between Domestic cartoons and Japanese anime to me. They're both animated shows at the end of the day, but the name changes based on the place of origin.

Which is amusing since the Japanese consider stuff like Star Trek and Doctor Who to be tokusatsu. I'd rather say that it's basically any special effects heavy show.

They are all cartoons.

American Tokusatsu = American adaptation of a Japanese Tokusatsu series

In other words, if an American series uses a Tokusatsu from Japan as its source material, then it is American Toku. If not, then it's just an American live-action series regardless of special effects.

Sorry but that is just wrong. Tokusatsu is anything with special effects. As stated already even the Japanese consider Star Trek and the like as toku. Just because some people don't want to admit that something NON Japaense can be toku, doesn't make it so.
