I always figured a big part of why Date started using chan when referring to Gotou is that one of Date's big things is trying to get Gotou to loosen up a bit. Gotou is the kind of uptight, proud person who would really find it grating to be referred to as chan (he mentions that he finds it embarassing and thinks Date is mocking him by using it), and getting him to accept and not be bugged by this would require him to not take things (like honorifics and other peoples' perceptions of him) quite so seriously. Only later, when it actually does stop bugging him, does it seem to become affectionate. Or at least that was my interpretation of it. But as I said before, I don't know anything about the language.

Isn't 'Aniki' supposed to be the equivilent of calling someone who isn't actually related to you "bro"? I dunno. I'll admit it's just a personal preference. Attempts to translate honorifics tend to feel somewhat awkward to me, or come across as childish ("Mr <first name>" sounds like a little kid speaking).

But at the same time, how would you make Gotou more relaxed sounding if you went with the same translation style that was used with Ankh-Chan. You can't really add anything to Gotou.

I know when we're on here it seems like there's always lots of people online, and you hear loads about conventions dedicated to Godzilla or Power Rangers, but the English-speaking tokusatsu fandom really is a very small group of people compared to anime fans, comic book fans, or even a specific franchise's fans like the transformers fandom. They're a bunch of fat, bearded manchildren with nothing better to do than sit around mommy and daddy's house and waste their precious lives away watching a cartoon intended for small girls, much like a stereotypical anime or Toku fan

I think the issue is more to do with upping the swear factor where their is no need to.

Well, I think everyone would agree with that. In principle, for translating a kid's show, introducing a lot of high-degree cussing is bad. I'm just curious about what "constant cussing" people are talking about when they say that OT adds too much swearing to the subs? They did that once in the OOO anniversary eps, and... when else?

If it's just people assuming all of OT's subs are like the anniversary subs, that's one thing. If people are just repeating things they've heard on the interbutts, that's another.

It seems impossible to discuss this subject in HJU without half the people involved in the thread actually knowing (for better or worse) some of the subbers.

It's because a lot of subbers browse HJU on a pretty regular basis, and most of the tokusatsu subbers network with each other. So if there's a thread like this, at least one guy sees it, and he's going to link it to a bunch of others. Before long, everyone in the subbing community has seen it. So don't post anything in a thread like this you don't want the subbers themselves to read.

What I think people don't realize is how many members of how many different groups read these threads peaceably. Right now you've got OT reps and TVN reps posting in the same thread together, basically being agreeable. There's no need for fansub discussion to be heated unless people decide it needs to be that way.

So a lot of the time it comes across that people base their arguments on sticking up for their friends and bashing those they don't get on with, rather than purely on translational merits.

I actually think this doesn't happen all that often, relative to just how many subbers read the forum. I think the sheer quantity of TVN, OT, and GUIS members among the core userbase and moderation team would shock a lot of people. The subbers for the most part can get along.

It honestly seems to be the leechers who get really passionate and defensive about which version they're watching. The people who actually work on subs are usually pretty open-minded about things and not particularly interested in causing drama.

As I said I can't speak the lingo, but I guess they're keeping the structure of the sentence much more like the original Japanese in those cases?

Yeah. Basically any time you are reading a translated work and the grammar feels a bit strange, just assume that the sentence is being written pretty much like it is in Japanese. Some people really like that. There's a fan-translation patch for FFVI that rewrites the whole game like that, just for instance.

Whats the difference between Aesir's and Over-Time's Foruze sub?

Stylistics, mainly. Characters have slightly different speech patterns and catchphrases are handled a bit differently ("It's space time!" vs. "Blast off!"). Aesir's includes more fancy typesetting, if you're into that. A preference between the two is likely to be a matter of taste. They're both good and eminently watchable.
