Before I want to discuss about the review, I want say few things about the series itself.
I’m notoriously NOT a fan of the show (I *HATE* the show).
It is one of my least favorite sentai I have seen so far and I personally think Riku Sanjo is one of my least favorite SENTAI (not TOKUSATSU in general; I haven’t seen Kamen Rider W; don’t ask) writers to date.
After disappointed by TV series and seriously despising VS movies with Go-busters (which features 2 veteran dinosaur themed sentai team that didn’t need to appear), I was REALLY worried how Returns Special would turn out; however, V-Cinema Returns Special tends to get better as year progress; Shinkenger was awful and terrible, Goseiger was OK but forgettable, and I absolutely LOVED Go-busters Returns.
So in the end, I was bit optimistic of how this would turn out.
So after seeing it for first time (and few more times), here’s my thought:
If there is one good/decent thing (or redeemable quality) that this series provides, is this special.
I personally enjoyed more than TV series; which was surprising.
Rangers in 2114 are written better this time, where they are more LIKEABLE than the actual series; where I thought they were are jerk, selfish, and despising (I REALLY hated King).
I almost wished if these characters were used in the series.
I especially like Dai-kun, where he is an exact opposite of Daigo/King/God/Whatever.
Ryo Ryusei (actor) did a very good job with this role, as a weak and quirky role, who eventually learned the importance of ranger and leadership. I like that his role was handled better than King.
Dai-kun > Daigo/King/God/Whatever.
I lol’d at 116-years old Souji.
He looks good despite the age.
Canderilla and Luckuryo as mentors are perfect choice, where they were practically the only likeable characters in the series. I was bit surprised voice actor for Canderilla, Haruka Tomatsu, made an appearance, which was nice touch. I wasn’t huge fan of her songs in the series, but she did pretty good job this time, where she sang the OP theme of the series. I’m not a fan of the OP theme song, but Tomatsu added a flavor and made it pretty decent, where I almost wished if she was the main singer of OP theme song instead.
The comedy and humor was handled better this time, where it felt really awkward in the series (which ranged from awful to “meh”/passable).
It’s nice to see Deboss Legion is back, where there minor tweaks in their design.
I was little disappointed that they didn’t bring back Endolf.
I like the design of Arslevan though, where it looks mysterious and matches the theme very well.
I was bit surprised that four season-based Debo Monsters also came back.
It helps tie the theme of years going by together nicely.
I like that they included Returns Special original ranger, KyoryuNavy; which is basically a modified suit of Deathryuger. It was bit let down that it didn’t get much screen time though.
It would have been nice if 2114 Kyoryuger (in their “wrong” suit) had crossover with 2014 rangers; then again, there will be problem with 2 KyoryuBlue though, which can be confusing.
I was also disappointed that 2114 Kyoryuger didn’t have their own mech fight and no original mech combination (then again, I wasn’t fan of their mech anyway, so no big loss there. lol)
Coming from someone who didn’t like the series, I was surprised how good this special was.
It wasn’t great or perfect, but it was FAR better than TV series.
If you are a huge Kyoryuger fan (which there seem to be a lot), you will definitely enjoy it.
Even for non-fan like me, I found it enjoyable as standalone special.
If you are fan of V-Cinema Returns special, check it out.
It wasn’t as good as Go-busters special, but I had fun watching it.
Good job Sanjo. Well done.
