Cartoon Network and Viz to launch Toonami Jetstream!

Streaming episodes of Naruto, Hikaru no Go, MAR and The Prince of Tennis at ToonamiJetstream.com beginning July 17 Cartoon Network and Viz Media are launching Toonami Jetstream, a joint broadband service, on July 17. The site will feature 24/7 streaming full-length epsiodes of current Cartoon Network shows Naruto and Samurai Jack, as well as series that are not currently on television: Hikaru no Go, MAR, and The Prince of Tennis.

According the the press release, IGPX, MegaMan NT Warrior, and Zoids Genesis are also planned for release on Toonami Jetstream, with additional series to be announced in the coming months.

"Cartoon Network has long been the dominant TV provider of the best anime and action," said Paul Condolora, senior vice president and general manager of Cartoon Network New Media. "And we were the first to stream, in 2001, full-length anime series online. Now, with this joint venture with VIZ Media, we will give our fans the chance to view popular shows on-demand and follow new series that cannot be seen anywhere else. We also believe this will bring new fans to the action/anime genre, create interest in new shows and build the overall popularity of Toonami on Cartoon Network."

"Toonami Jetstream will provide our current fans and new fans alike with unlimited opportunities to view our popular hit shows such as Naruto," explained John Easum, executive vice president of VIZ Media. "It will also give us the opportunity to share with our fans an unprecedented variety of Japan's newest and most exciting animated series. Wonder of those are on deck to be on the real Toonami.

Does anyone see this being like the Reactor or whatever it was called way back when? Where shows hit this place and we never see them on television? Star Blazers, anyone? :laugh:

Anyways, streaming pretty much means I won't be watching. I don't got broadband for one. For two....I can just download it. If it came on TV it would matter, but net only just ensures me getting it off S/L.

Newsarama had an interview with Art Roche, head of the Toonami Jetstream project that will be launching July 17. Roche revealed that Megas XLR has been added to the Jetstream lineup. He has also revealed some more information:

-TOM will be hosting (pretty much "duh" there).

-The DCAU shows are a possibility, but dealing with Warner Bros. and DC Comics is, as he puts it, "troublesome."

-Since the shows online don't have to fit into a 22 minute time limit like on TV, the anime shows will not be edited for time restraints. However, they will still have to conform to CN's standards and practices.

-When asked about a full schedule for Jetstream, Roche responded, "Well, we built this thing so there could be an unlimited number of shows. Once we really get going we hope to be able to present you with pages upon pages of menus to choose from. We really want to get as many shows in there as possible."

Looks like we're in for a wild ride!
