Can We Talk About the Legacy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night?

I recently replayed Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and it hit me just how groundbreaking that game was for its time. The mix of action, RPG elements, and the famous "Metroidvania" style completely changed the landscape of platformers and exploration in games.

The visuals are still stunning, and the soundtrack? Absolutely legendary. I mean, who doesn't get nostalgic hearing "Vampire Killer" or "Bloody Tears"? It's like they just nailed the perfect atmosphere, blending gothic horror with catchy music that just stays with you.

Plus, let's not forget Alucard, such a brilliant character, and the accessibility of that game with multiple endings depending on how you play really added depth. It's a shame to see how many new gamers have skipped over it just because it's an older title.

What do you all think? Does Symphony of the Night still hold up for you? What impact did it have on your gaming experience? And are there any modern games you feel have captured that same magic?

Symphony of the Night truly set a high bar for exploration and gameplay mechanics. The way it seamlessly blended action and RPG elements was revolutionary; it’s fascinating how its design philosophy still resonates in games today. The map design, where you can get lost and rewarded for exploration, teaches players to engage with the environment in a fashion that many modern titles struggle to replicate.

Alucard is indeed a standout character, not just for his abilities but for how he embodies the themes of the game. The multiple endings add so much replay value, and it’s a sign of how meaningful player choice can be.

As for modern games, I’d say Hollow Knight captures that same sense of atmosphere and exploration. The art style and haunting soundtrack create a similar vibe, while the intricate level design encourages methodical exploration much like Symphony did. What are your thoughts on how modern indie games implement that legacy?
