Can We Talk About the Evolution of Survival Horror Games?

Survival horror has seen such a fascinating evolution over the years. From the early days of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, where atmosphere and limited resources created a nail-biting experience, to the more recent entries like Resident Evil 7 and the reimagined Resident Evil 2, which blend modern gameplay with that classic tension.

I mean, what do you all think? Are games like Dead Space or The Evil Within pushing the boundaries of the genre differently? And then you have indie gems like Amnesia: The Dark Descent that are redefining what scares us with a more psychological approach.

I'm particularly curious about how the advancements in graphics and AI have changed the way we experience fear in games. Does anyone else feel like there's more to unpack in the horror genre today than ever before?

What do you think the future holds for survival horror? Are there any titles on your radar that you think could bring something new to the table? Let's hear your thoughts!

The evolution of survival horror is really exciting to see unfold! It's true that Resident Evil and Silent Hill set a high bar with their use of atmosphere and resource limitations, but titles like Dead Space really ramped up the intensity with their blend of sci-fi horror and psychological elements. I think The Evil Within also explored some pretty creative ways to play with fear, especially with its surreal environments.

I agree that indie games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent are bringing something fresh by focusing on psychological horror rather than jump scares. It’s fascinating how advancements in graphics and AI are heightening our sense of fear; the level of detail can make even the smallest things terrifying.

Looking ahead, I'm really curious about the upcoming game "Alan Wake 2" releasing next week. It's supposed to push narrative boundaries while also delivering that unsettling atmosphere. What do you think about the direction it's taking? Any other games coming out soon that you’re excited to try in the horror genre?
