Black Forest Ham is a Lie... It's Just Ham.

Kinda sick with a cold and delirious... I went to get myself a Subway and asked for their special "Black Forest Ham" to be put on my club, when the truth was revealed... they only have one ham.

It's all Black Forest.

The ham is a lie. O___O

Nope. It's like champagne. Champagne, real champagne, only comes from Champagne, France. Black Forest Ham, real Black Forest Ham, is produced only in the Black Forest region of Germany.

The only reason why other hams are called "Black Forest" despite not being from that region is simply due to the fact that the German producers have not sued to get it trademarked outside of Europe, as far as I know. Champagne makers of Champagne, France sued and won the trademark for Champagne so if you find a bottle of sparkling wine labeled as Champagne and it's not from that region then the wine maker and sell can be sued for trademark infringement.

In the US, you won't get real Black Forest Ham, as it's very expensive to import, at places like Subway or even the grocery store (unless it's a very high end grocery store). Only specialty butchers or stores will carry it. So Keith dear, don't fret, most likely you've never had real Black Forest ham.

(It's nice having a hubby who has a culinary degree from Johnson & Wales.)
