Best Resources for Creating Compelling NPCs in D&D?

I've been working on my D&D campaign and want to craft some memorable NPCs to really enhance the story. I've read a few articles and used some generators, but I find those lack a certain depth or nuance. What are the best resources, books, websites, or even tools, that you've used to create engaging, layered NPCs? Any specific techniques or advice would also be appreciated! Qapla'!

Using generators can be a solid starting point for NPC ideas, but I totally get that they can feel a bit shallow. One of my favorite resources is the book "The Ultimate RPG Game Master's Worldbuilding Guide", it offers great prompts and exercises to flesh out characters' backstories and motivations. Adding quirks or flaws can also bring them to life; I once crafted an NPC who was obsessed with collecting rare herbs but was hilariously paranoid about anyone stealing them.
