American versus Japanese Toku

When The Fruit Of Life Corrupts Men
Okay, so long story short, I got into this long winded arguement on /m/ in a thread devouted to American based Toku

They mostly brought up Captain Power, Super Force, Street Hawk, Automan, and Knight Rider in comparsion to Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, saying that it was more serious and not as light hearted

I countered with Showa (Amazon, Black, Black RX), which they laughed at, saying it was MORE juvenille than Hesei

They also stated the more refined production, FX, dialogue, themes, characterization, plot, etc, which I get

Because, really, you can't compare something that has next to no budget, to one that has slightly better one

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the subject?

To be fair, Black and Black RX could get incredibly juvenile. Amazon could be at times as well, but it was balanced with a heavy dosage of rip-and-tear violence.

I cannot really make any fair comparisons to any American-made toku though, especially the ones /m/ likes to bring up. Mostly because I have not seen any of them.

Should've countered by asking:

Aren't they all cancelled? None of them air today and barely anyone in the States know of them while Japanese toku is known more in the States in general and is STILL running today. Most of those had no toy-lines and or if they did , they were too expensive or people didn't care about them.

Because if those shows had started with a safe storyline ,had a lower budget and tone ,in exception to Knight Rider and then progressed , they might have gotten spinoffs to today.

Sure American toku are more refined, but they are also costly and often go towards an awkward demographic which does not get toys but does not like superheroes in the traditional colored uniforms or do things that most shows at that time didn't dare to do. As a result, American tokusatsu series are pretty much fucked from the start because the production goes into the assumption that upstaging Power Rangers with higher budget, blood and gore , leather and mature themes do the trick.

If there's anything to consider , it's that they should pay attention to what makes Power rangers so accessible and successful and how Sentai ,Ultraman and Kamen Rider are executed and aim for a clear demographic . The best one would be the family as that's how many Japanese toku started off as towards.

It's something the best kids's show can do because if they can immerse the parents and the children into a good story with flash and soul , decent economical merchandising and decent promotion , you have a hit.
