Watching it a few times helps with the plot, but you'll never fill in all the holes with just the movie. The manga it's based from is like 8 books long, and from what I understand the theatrical production is only the "best of" highlights from the first couple books.

But yes, bang up film! ^_^ Long live Otomo!

I just watched this a couple of weeks ago for like the 3rd time and I finally understood it enough ^_^ but yeah I loved this movie its made me go What the **** just like end of evenagelion so yeah I enjoyed it

Dark Horse re-released the manga here in the States a few years back in six volumes. I think each is about 300 pages or so, maybe more (I've only got the first three volumes). If one was to try to match up events in each version, the movie would end somewhere around the end of the third volume of the manga. Needless to say, there's a lot of story missing from the anime.

It's pretty difficult to compare the film and the manga. A lot of what happens in the film either happens differently in the manga or in some cases not at all. Certain characters are left out of the film entirely as well. I know it's only natural when adapting something to the movie screen, but I think anyone that likes the movie would do well to get themselves the manga.The basic concept is the same, but the manga is more fleshed out in terms of story and characters.
