Acheivements: Love em or hate em?

If you own an Xbox 360, chances are you're familiar with the achievement system. Challenges to unlock to increase your gamerscore. It took a little while to take off but these days it's one of the biggest features of the 360. It's so popular many others have tried to follow suit with their own achievement system. Sony has Trophies on the PS3, Valve has incorporated achievements into their games, and even some Nintendo games have tried to include their own variation of it but none have really been able to capture the popularity or appeal of the achievement system on the 360.

Some gamers are so obsessed with unlocking achievements and increasing their gamerscore they've earned the title "achievement whores". There are also gamers who can't stand achievements, hate everything about them, and just wish they would go away. Where do you stand?

Personally I enjoy them and it does give you something extra to do. I don't see why they get the hate they do from some people. Achievements are just that: achievements. Fun little challenges to take on and show off to your friends. Stuff like this has been around since the beginning of gaming--like finding all the warp zones in Super Mario Bros., finding the hidden secrets in Zelda, or collecting all 120 stars in Super Mario 64. They also prolong a game's replay value giving you more to do and go for. I'm not obsessed with getting every single one though. There should be an reward for getting a certain amount of points such as being able to use them to unlock downloadable(is that a word?) extras from certain games for people like me who can't get online.

Speaking of online I hate it when they make a lot of achievements related to online play. Because like I said I don't have the stuff for it and get online. Plus if you get a game long after it comes out, the online community is most likely dead and there will be no practically way to get them.
