Like any job, remember these three things...
1.) Dress nicely - you don't have to dress like you're going to a wedding or a funeral, but don't dress like a slob with junk that should stay in the trunk (guys and girls) hanging out. Pass on your well loved (and worn) cheethos stained Def Leppard shirt and gaming fez, and opt instead for a nice button up shirt and slacks (if you're a guy). Jeans are sometimes ok. When it doubt, overdress and then ask about the dress code.
2.) Be attentive, be on time, and ask questions. Don't ever assume that "Con X" does it like "Con Y" - sometimes, things are different for a reason and sometimes they're just different. Make sure you know exactly what you're supposed to do and when you need to show up. Just because you're doing the job "for free", it does mean you shouldn't do it well. Oftentimes this gets you free con admission, free swag, and opens the door for future opportunities. See number 3 for clarification.
3.) Wil Wheaton says don't be a dick. Seriously, never forget this. You're not god (even if you've got a doofy headset or "Security" t-shirt on), you're a volunteer doing an unpaid job - and that job is serving your fellow congoers to make sure they have a great experience. If you have to be "mean" (i.e. tell people they cant come in, go somewhere, do something, etc), do it nicely. If you're a mega-jerk you probably won't be asked to come back again to volunteer in the future and certainly will never get a paying job. Furthermore, you never know who's watching you - congoers are sometimes industry bigwigs/influential people and you won't always know it at the time. I can't tell you how many hot headed "hur, respect my ah-thor-rit-tye" douchebags I've encountered who think [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yl4xw74Rcs&feature=related"]"They Are The Law!"[/ame]... :shakefist
Oh yeah, and have fun. :loltongue:
