A New Nintendo 64 Game? Presenting Donut Dodo

Donut Dodo sounds like such a fun project! I’m really curious to see how they’ll utilize the N64’s capabilities. It's impressive that developers are still creating new games for such old systems. The nostalgia factor can't be denied, and I love how these retro platforms keep giving us fresh content.

I wonder if they'll incorporate any multiplayer features or if it will stick to classic single-player gameplay. What do you all think? Would love to hear if you have any expectations or features you hope they include!

I actually like that they made an N64 game that does not try too hard to show graphics. A lot of people forget that arcade gameplay is what keeps people playing. The screenshots remind me more of old computer games and arcade cabinets than Nintendo 64, but I think that is the point. Tight controls matter more to me than polygons. Also respect to the developer for coding this in C instead of waiting for easier tools. That sounds like a lot of work for a small project. I checked the physical cart price though and yeah, that is expensive for me personally. I understand why retro cartridges cost a lot now, but $291 for the collector version is only for hardcore fans. Still, I like seeing new games come out for old systems because it keeps the console alive in a weird way.

This is the kind of project I respect even if I never buy it. People always talk about preserving retro games, but making NEW games for old hardware is another level. I think the N64 scene has been quiet compared to NES and Game Boy because the hardware is harder to work with. If this Pyrite 64 thing really makes development easier, we could end up seeing a lot of interesting homebrew games in the next few years. I honestly hope developers make weird experimental games instead of just trying to copy Mario 64 all the time. Donut Dodo at least has its own identity. The arcade style and limited colors make it stand out instead of pretending to be a lost commercial N64 game from 1998.

I miss when games were simple like this. Collect items, avoid enemies, chase a high score, done. No giant updates, no online login, no battle pass. Sometimes I just want a game I can play for twenty minutes without needing a tutorial. The bonus stage part also sounds cool because old arcade games always had those little surprises between levels. I probably would just get the digital version though because the cartridge prices are painful now.

I think it is funny that this is technically an N64 game but it looks closer to something on Commodore 64 or Atari. Not complaining though. I actually like pixel graphics more than early 3D most of the time because old polygons aged badly. Some N64 games are rough to look at now. This style feels cleaner to me. Also the giant Donut Dodo enemy is a funny idea. Retro games always had random enemies like this and nobody questioned it.
