Sega And Amazon Team Up For Like A Dragon: Yakuza TV Series

Looks like, after Fallout, Amazon’s next video game adaption will be Sega’s Like A Dragon series — which, until recently, went by the title “Yakuza.” The TV show will use both names at once, at least for its first season. Like A Dragon / Yazuka is sort of a refined version of Sega’s earlier Shenmue series, with a dash of GTA’s open-world crime formula and a good helping of silliness mixed in. It’s a long-running series that first started in 2005 (the US got the first game in 2006), but never really became a sensation until late last decade. Yakuza used to be so niche that there was worry at one point that Sega would stop translating the games. But the next game sold well, and the game after that sold VERY well, and now whenever a Like A Dragon game is announced there is no question we’ll get it. Reportedly, Like A Dragon: Yakuza (the TV show) will use that original 2005 game as a story base, and focus

Yakuza? A TV show? This is excellent, but let's be honest here. Video game adaptations include... To say the least, there has been a complicated history. Sure, the games are terrific, with an excellent balance of action, heart, and silliness, but how can they convert that to a six-episode series? And why divide it into two halves? It feels like a gimmick. Plus, 2005? That was almost twenty years ago. Will it appeal to modern audiences? I'm cautiously optimistic, but I won't pass judgment until I see a trailer.

Dame da ne dame yo dame na no yo!

Yakuza on Amazon?! This is incredible news! I've been playing these games since the PS2 days, and it's awesome to see them finally getting the mainstream recognition they deserve. Kazuma Kiryu is a legendary character, and a perfect fit for live-action. Plus, filming in Japan with a Japanese actor? That's exactly what this series needs to capture the authentic feel. I don't mind the split release schedule – it just builds anticipation! October can't come soon enough. Binge-watching the first half, then waiting two weeks for the rest? That's pure torture, but the best kind!

Hmm, a Yakuza TV show. Not sure how I feel about this. The games were great because they were interactive. You felt connected to Kiryu and the world around him. Can a TV show replicate that emotional investment? Plus, the games walked a tightrope between serious crime drama and wacky side activities. Will the show maintain that balance, or lean too heavily on one side? The original 2005 story is a good choice, but I would've loved to see them tackle the later games with their more complex narratives. Still, I'll give it a shot. Maybe it'll surprise me.

Yakuza on Amazon? This is bigger than Mr. Shakedown himself winning the lottery! Imagine seeing the Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance come to life on screen! I hope they get the brotherhood dynamic right, the unbreakable bonds forged in blood and sake. Six episodes seem short, but maybe they can squeeze in a mahjong parlor scene or two. Split release? Whatever, as long as it keeps the hype train rolling! Just picturing Kiryu facing off against Shimano on screen gives me chills. Can't wait to see who they cast for Majima – gotta be someone who can capture that crazy energy!

Yakuza on the telly box? Interesting proposition. The Dojima family drama has all the makings of a gripping saga – loyalty, betrayal, the struggle for power. Just gotta portray the honor code accurately, the respect one earns through sacrifice and unwavering loyalty. Kiryu's journey towards redemption is a powerful narrative thread. Focusing on the dual timelines allows for a deeper exploration of the events that shaped him. Split release? Perhaps a strategic move to keep viewers engaged in the story and speculating on the twists to come. As long as they capture the essence of the Yakuza world – the unwavering loyalty, the brutal consequences of betrayal – this could be a worthy adaptation.

Yakuza on TV? Dame da ne! Just kidding, this could be a real opportunity to showcase the lighter side of the Yakuza world, you know? The karaoke bars, the drunken singalongs, the sheer joy of belting out "Baka Mitai" at the top of your lungs after a long day of shakedowns and street fights.
