A new prequel to the original Octopath Traveler has dropped, with a unique experience from the rest of the series. Square Enix releases the new Octopath Traveler 0 onto Xbox, Playstation, Switch, and PC! Back in 2018, the first Octopath Traveler would release, and set the stage for a new franchise. It would set itself apart from Square’s other RPG series, with a unique dialogue system and battle system that engaged fans. This, in tandem with its HD-2D aesthetic captivated many with a blend of substance and style. Square Enix would then make two new games for the series, one for mobile and another on console and PC. The mobile game, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, was a prequel in a similar vane to the new Octopath Traveler 0. However, it was still limited gameplay wise compared to the original, which the new prequel seeks to rectify. [embedyt]

I just tried the demo for Octopath Traveler 0 and I am genuinely impressed. The ability to customize my protagonist makes the game feel like it’s really mine. I like that it’s not just about fighting but also rebuilding your hometown. Managing Wishvale and seeing it grow adds a layer of connection that wasn’t in the previous games. The Path Actions system returning is great because it makes every conversation feel important. Even small choices can change who joins your town and how people react. The graphics are exactly what I expected from this series, sharp and nostalgic at the same time. I haven’t had this much fun planning and strategizing in an RPG in a long time. I’m curious to see how far I can push my character’s abilities and how many unique outcomes I can get with NPCs. I also appreciate that it’s available on multiple platforms, so everyone can play.

I think what excites me most is the chance to customize my own character. In previous Octopath games, you had set heroes, and while the stories were interesting, I always felt limited in how I could approach the game. Now being able to choose the looks, the battle style, and even how I interact with people makes the world feel more alive. The town rebuilding aspect is really satisfying too because it gives a sense of progress beyond just leveling up in battles. Every choice you make seems to have weight, and I enjoy that kind of gameplay. It’s also nice that if you’ve played previous Square Enix titles, you can get rewards. That shows the developers care about long-time fans.

The last few games had interesting characters, but they all felt set in stone. Now I can approach the story how I want, which is refreshing. I also think the town-building mechanic adds a nice long-term goal beyond just fighting enemies. It makes the world feel responsive and gives a sense of accomplishment when people join your town. The graphics are beautiful, and the combat system is familiar but still satisfying. I like games that combine strategy with story, and this one seems to hit both well. I plan to play on PC so I can enjoy the visuals fully.
