A new prequel to the original Octopath Traveler has dropped, with a unique experience from the rest of the series. Square Enix releases the new Octopath Traveler 0 onto Xbox, Playstation, Switch, and PC!
Back in 2018, the first Octopath Traveler would release, and set the stage for a new franchise. It would set itself apart from Square’s other RPG series, with a unique dialogue system and battle system that engaged fans. This, in tandem with its HD-2D aesthetic captivated many with a blend of substance and style.
Square Enix would then make two new games for the series, one for mobile and another on console and PC. The mobile game, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, was a prequel in a similar vane to the new Octopath Traveler 0. However, it was still limited gameplay wise compared to the original, which the new prequel seeks to rectify.
Octopath Traveler 0 takes place in the land of Osterra, with your hometown destroyed and you left to pick up the pieces. Now, you must explore the realm to find the ones responsible for your home’s destruction to take revenge. Not only that, but you must also rebuild your home back to its former glory.
For the first time, you take the reins of a custom protagonist that you can build up however you want. From their looks to their battle style, you have control over how you approach the world. This is important, as you are not just fighting for yourself, but to also build back your home from its destruction.
Throughout the game, you’ll return back to your hometown Wishvale to build it up. You do this by building up new structures and bringing in new people into the town. You bring people in by conversing with them, and using the Path Actions to your advantage.
Just like the previous games, Path Actions and the Break and Boost system make a return. You have a variety of options to choose when speaking to NPCs, your actions shaping who you are and how the world sees you. Of course some of those you talk to can join your party, and help you fight back against those that seek your end through turn based combat, leveraging Breaks and Boosts to give you an edge in battle.
The game releases on Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S through Microsoft Store, and on Steam. You can also purchase a free demo to explore both the prologue and first chapter.
If you have Save data from other Square Enix games, you can get you some rewards. The games that can give you these rewards include Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, Bravely Default HD, or Dragon Quest 1, 2, and 3 HD-2D Remakes.
