Square Enix was at Anime Expo last weekend — but not to announce games. They’ve gotten into the manga and book publishing business, and they’re introducing ten new volumes over the next nine months…and not all of them are about their games! Seven manga series are planned for US release from Square in Spring 2026, including the new psychological drama A Starlit Darkness, from the author of Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! They also plan to release Betrothed to a Fox Demon, Vol. 1, The Prince’s Keeper, Vol. 1 and Otaku x Gal, Vol. 1. Plus these volumes with very to-the-point titles: A Cat Is a Cat in Any Life and My Favorite VTuber Is Scary IRL (I mean yeah, probably). Details on all these books can be found below. During their panel Square also announced three all-new game tie-in books are being localized, the most demanded of them being FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH: Material Ultimania. Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the game’s production is in here, including character models and illustrations, locations and backgrounds, cutscene storyboards, and more, with commentary. Also be on the lookout for a NieR poster collection and a cute Final […]

I’m really curious about A Starlit Darkness. It sounds like it will explore deep emotional struggles, especially with Subaru’s suicidal thoughts and the sudden shift when Geppo appears. I appreciate when manga tackles dark themes in a mature way. It reminds me of Welcome to the NHK, but maybe even darker. If the writing is solid, this could become one of those rare manga that sticks with you. Also, I’m impressed that Square Enix is pushing original stories that aren’t game-related. It shows that they’re not just relying on established franchises but are also investing in character-driven drama. I'll definitely keep an eye on the release date

I never thought I’d say this, but I want the FF9 picture book. Vivi has always been my favorite character. Seeing his childhood with Grandpa Quan in a cozy storybook format? That’s too cute to pass up. I don’t care if it’s made for kids, I’ll read it with a smile on my face. Also, big shout-out to Kazuhiko Aoki. His touch always adds emotional depth to FF stories. I hope this sells well enough that they consider doing books for other characters too.

For collectors, the NieR Poster Collection and Material Ultimania for FFVII Rebirth are no-brainers. These books will probably sell out fast once fans realize they’re full of content you can’t easily find online. Especially Ultimania. Those production notes and concept art pages are often goldmines for cosplayers and lore analysts. The price seems reasonable for what you're getting too. I’ll probably get both, even if it means skipping other releases.

The Prince’s Keeper speaks to my heart. A cursed prince turned into a cat and a witch who has to care for him? It feels so sweet already. I like these kinds of gentle fantasy stories, where the stakes are emotional more than world-ending. I hope Miranda and Heinrich slowly grow closer and that it’s not just played for laughs. There’s something very charming about romance mixed with magic.
