One Tree Entertainment has announced the new horror feature they’re distributing, First Moon, is now available on digital and on-demand platforms. It sucks to be turned into a werewolf at the best of times, but the young girl at the center of this story has it worse than that. A religious cult has discovered she has the curse and has abducted her. She’s now trapped in a cage awaiting whatever they believe is the cure for lycanthropy. Optimistically, maybe it’ll cure her, but more likely, it’ll kill her. Why’s it called First Moon instead of Full Moon? Wouldn’t a full moon make more sense? Well, the young woman hasn’t turned into a wolf yet. The next full moon will be her first and the aim of the cult is either to cure or dispose of her before then. Escape is a third option but she’ll need more resources than she’s got. We’ll see what the moon provides…. First Moon stars Lauren Esposito (The Conjuring 2) and Julian Curtis (Dance Academy). Creature designs came from Emmy Award-winning SFX artist Thomas E. Surprenant, who has worked on a lot of projects including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The […]

That detail makes her situation feel more urgent, because she is stuck between being normal and becoming something dangerous. The cult angle also interests me since it adds human danger on top of supernatural danger. I always find it more frightening when the human characters act with extreme beliefs. The cast looks solid, especially Lauren Esposito, and knowing the SFX artist has real experience makes me think the creature form will look good. I plan to watch it because I want to see if the story chooses to save her, change her, or let her go full wolf.

This sounds interesting to me because the threat feels simple and direct. She has a deadline and she needs to survive. I do not always need complicated plots. Sometimes I just want to follow one person trying to get out of a bad place. If the film is short and focused, I might watch it this week.

I think the idea is fine, but the title makes me confused. “First Moon” is not a phrase I hear often, so it does not give me an immediate idea of what kind of movie it is. If I saw it on a menu, I would not know it was about werewolves. I think a clearer title would help it reach more people. Still, the creature effects might carry it. If the design team is good, maybe the movie is worth a try.

I am more interested in the emotional part. A young woman trapped, not knowing if she will live or die, and not knowing what she is turning into. That situation alone creates pressure, even before the cult appears. I want to see how the film shows her fear and her decisions. If she tries to talk her way out or if she tries to break out by force. Horror is better for me when the main character is allowed to think and not only scream.

For me, the big selling point is Thomas E. Surprenant working on the creature design. I watch a lot of older shows like Deep Space Nine and Buffy, so I recognize his work. I like practical effects when possible, so I hope this movie uses more real makeup instead of too much CGI. Even if the story is simple, good creature work makes me happy.

I might skip this one. I prefer supernatural stories with bigger world-building and not just one location and one person in danger. It feels too small for my taste. I like when werewolf films show the history of the curse or different groups of people dealing with it. This one looks more contained, so it is not for me right now.

This movie sounds like a tense experience. I like when the story starts before the first transformation because it lets the audience feel the same countdown as the character. The cult adds another layer because she cannot just wait it out. She has to work for her survival. I hope the film does not rush the ending and gives a satisfying resolution, whether she escapes or transforms.

The plot is familiar, but that is not a bad thing for me. I enjoy horror that stays close to a classic formula. A person in danger + a strict time limit + supernatural elements. If it keeps the pacing steady, I can enjoy it even if it is predictable. I plan to watch it on digital when I want something simple but tense.
