MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls– Does Marvel Even Need Capcom Anymore?

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls – Does Marvel Even Need Capcom Anymore? For decades, the phrase “Marvel fighting game” was basically code for Marvel vs. Capcom. From the glorious chaos of MVC2 to the cracked-out synergy of Ultimate MVC3, Capcom gave us a legendary tag fighter that lived rent-free in the FGC’s heart. But after the dropped input that was MVC: Infinite, it felt like the Marvel/Capcom romance had run out of meter. Now? Marvel’s tagged in a new partner. One with a big name, tight execution, and enough cel-shading to blind a TO. MVC: Infinite Got Dropped Harder Than Morbius’ Second Weekend Let’s be real: Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite didn’t just miss—it got smoked. EVO dropped it. Fans dragged it. The roster was missing X-Men. And Chun-Li’s face looked like she’d just teched a command grab in real life. Why? Reportedly, Marvel (under then-CEO Isaac Perlmutter) demanded the removal of mutants in favor of MCU characters like Captain Marvel and Gamora. And while those are solid characters in the movies, they’re no Storm or Magneto in a fighting game context. Then Dragon Ball FighterZ launched—same year, same style, same 3v3—but with actual hype. The Marvel faithful saw ArcSys cooking and […]

Capcom fumbled. Plain and simple. When you bench the X-Men, you’re asking for your game to flop. Marvel gave them everything for years, and they dropped it like a hot rock. Now ArcSys steps up, and they’re doing what Capcom refused to: give people what they’ve asked for. Doom. Storm. Actual support. 4v4 sounds ridiculous in the best way. I’m not worried about Marvel anymore. I’m worried Capcom might never get their spot back. I say let ArcSys cook. They earned it.

I’m just so relieved to see mutants being treated with respect again. Storm’s inclusion from the beginning made me tear up a little, not gonna lie. She belongs in every Marvel lineup. It really hurt when Marvel was pretending X-Men didn’t exist, all for movie rights reasons. ArcSys bringing her back and giving her that shine says everything. I don’t care who makes the game as long as the soul is there. And right now, Marvel Tōkon feels like it has soul. Capcom gave us great memories. ArcSys is giving us a new chapter.

ArcSys has already proven their understanding of system depth in Dragon Ball FighterZ, and now with 4v4, the potential for layered strategies is unreal. Think of assist order, team composition, DHC paths—all of it just became a lot more meaningful. Capcom was great, but after Infinite, it was clear their focus drifted. If Marvel is trusting ArcSys to push the genre forward, I’m in. I’d love to see more defensive options though. Marvel games have always leaned offense-heavy. If Tōkon can balance both, we might get a new standard.

I’m tired of everyone acting like Capcom ruined MVC: Infinite by themselves. Go back and look at the facts—Marvel had full creative control over that game. Capcom didn’t choose to cut the X-Men. That came from Marvel, from corporate decisions that prioritized the MCU brand over the history of the comics and what fans actually wanted. Capcom was working under restrictions. They couldn’t use half the legacy characters that made the series iconic. What were they supposed to do?

And people trashed the graphics, but you think Capcom wanted to go with that art style? That was part of meeting Marvel's branding standards. The ugly UI, the flat presentation—it reeked of executive interference. Capcom gets blamed because their name’s on the box, but Marvel forced the direction. They didn’t want Magneto or Wolverine, and they wanted to push Captain Marvel at every turn.

Now Marvel teams up with ArcSys and suddenly they're the good guys again? No. Don’t rewrite history. Capcom gave us MVC2 and 3, they built the foundation. Marvel nearly wrecked it. I’ll try Tōkon, but I’m not pretending Marvel didn’t sabotage their own brand when Infinite dropped. Give Capcom some damn respect.

I grew up with MVC2 and 3, so part of me is sad that Capcom and Marvel seem officially over. But after Infinite… yeah, that wasn’t it. What I’ve seen from Tōkon looks clean and full of life. I just hope they don’t forget what made MVC special: not just the characters, but the energy. The craziness, the personality, the VOICES. If we get multiple language options and they bring back that spark, then yeah, Marvel doesn’t need Capcom. But I still want a goodbye match between the two someday.

What draws me to Tōkon most is the art direction. Arc System Works consistently treats animation like an artform, and their cel-shading style has weight and rhythm. Marvel characters have never looked this alive in motion. I don’t play at high level, but I watch a lot, and this is a game made for spectators too. It’s refreshing to see a studio take Marvel’s roster and elevate it visually. I’d love to see characters like Scarlet Witch or She-Hulk rendered in that same striking style.

The idea of ArcSys managing a 4v4 fighter is fascinating from a systems perspective. You have to think about cooldowns, synergy, meter scaling, assist behavior—all of this becomes exponentially more complex with four characters. If they can make it accessible without dumbing it down, we’re looking at a game that might surpass not only MVC3 in style, but also in mechanical expression. Infinite never figured that out. The fact that ArcSys gets both the surface-level hype and the under-the-hood finesse? That’s a winning combination. Marvel made the right call.

Whoever at Marvel Games is behind choosing ArcSys for this project—I seriously owe you a huge thank you. This is the only studio that feels like a truly worthy choice besides Capcom, and I couldn’t be more excited. I’ve never replayed a game trailer this many times before. The moment the music shifts and Doom shows up, then Storm jumps in? It gives me chills every time. That whole sequence is so powerful. This game is going to be insanely fun. You really made the right call with this one.

When I first saw there was a new Marvel fighting game, I thought, “Nice, that could be fun.” But the second I saw Arc System Works was behind it? That was it for me—I was all in. No hesitation. They’ve earned my trust completely. Just take my money already. Honestly, they deserve way more credit. Can we please give a huge shoutout to the real heroes here? ArcSys, you’re doing amazing. Keep going strong!
