Looking for some free comics? IDW has announced a partnership with Webtoon to run comics from its library on the popular webcomic app. These won’t be new ones, but existing comics that came out years ago, retrofitted to read better in the Webtoon format. The offerings are kaiju (Godzilla), thriller/horror (Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees, a comic about a domestic bear who’s also a serial murderer), and biography (George Takei’s They Called Us Enemy). ● Godzilla: Unnatural Disaster –The three-part saga featuring Godzilla’s iconic rogues gallery, epic kaiju battles, and a thrilling adventure spanning different time periods – including a trip to the underworld. ● Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees –A dark and twisted tale about Samantha, a small-town bear who lives a double life. By day, she’s the helpful hardware store owner, and by night, she’s a serial killer. ● They Called Us Enemy –The graphic memoir follows actor George Takei as he revisits his haunting childhood in American concentration camps during World War II in a gripping tale of courage, country, loyalty, and love. I think this is a smart move by IDW. Webtoon has a huge audience, especially among younger readers. If even a small percent of them start reading Godzilla or Beneath the Trees, that’s already a win. I read “They Called Us Enemy” before, and it was very emotional and powerful. Putting something like that on Webtoon can help more people understand that comics are not just about superheroes. They can also be serious and historical. I hope IDW also thinks about making new stories for Webtoon someday. If they see it working, maybe they’ll go beyond just reposting old comics.

Honestly, I don’t know if just reformatting older comics is enough. Marvel and DC are making new stories just for Webtoon, so people are more excited about their updates. But I will give it a chance. If the Godzilla one has cool art and fun fights, I might keep reading. Also, the bear serial killer one sounds weird but interesting. Webtoon is free, so I guess there’s nothing to lose by trying.

“They Called Us Enemy” hit me really hard when I first read it in print. I think putting it on Webtoon is actually a great idea. More people, especially students, can read it now without needing to buy the book. That’s so important, because the story has deep meaning and talks about real history that isn’t taught enough. I want to see how they arrange the panels to make the reading flow feel natural on phones.
