Catagrams Launches On Mobile Devices

Ponderosa Games has introduced Catagrams, a word puzzle game that’s like Scrabble mixed with…cat. For now, it’s exclusive to mobile devices. On each screen you’re presented with a bunch of tiles, each with one letter on them. Your task is to drag the tiles to make words, but you can only match up tiles with the same color stripe across them. However, you can use one tile more than once by intersecting words, much like a crossword puzzle. Figure out the correct words and placement, and you win. What does this have to do with cats? Nothing on the surface, but it’s all in the theming. The graphic design of Catagrams is a chill one, decorated with loose cartoons of felines chilling in nature. You can see more cats and more scenes through completing puzzles. “I grew up in Colorado and have always enjoyed reading, gaming, doodling, and travel,” says Tisa Foster, owner and co-founder of Ponderosa Games. “Needless to say, I’m also a word nerd and absolutely love cats! In addition to programming, I created all the art in the game – so you could say this is a true labor of love. Catagrams is all of my favorite […]

I love word puzzles, and I love cats—what’s not to like? I appreciate that the developer put their personal touch into the game, from the artwork to the puzzles. The daily puzzle aspect is a nice touch, and the fact that some proceeds go to cat rescues makes me feel good about supporting it. I just hope the ads aren’t too intrusive because that can ruin a chill game like this. Definitely going to give it a try!

It’s a cute concept, but I don’t see what makes this any different from other word games besides the cat theme. If the words themselves had something to do with cats, I’d get it, but it sounds like just a standard word puzzle with a feline skin. I also don’t love the idea of in-app purchases to extend gameplay—I miss when you could just buy a game and play as much as you wanted. Might check it out, but I’m not convinced yet.

I don’t even care if the game itself is good—the fact that it has hand-drawn cats and supports cat rescues is enough for me. Plus, I love games that have a relaxing vibe, so this is right up my alley. I’ll probably end up buying the ad-free version just to support the developer and avoid interruptions. Looking forward to unlocking all the cat scenes!

I wish this was on PC or even the Switch. I get that mobile games reach more people, but touchscreen controls for word puzzles just don’t feel as good to me as using a keyboard. That being said, I like the idea of curated difficulty settings, and the art style looks appealing. Maybe if they add a PC version down the line, I’d give it a shot.

Free is nice, but we all know how "free" mobile games work. Ads, limited playtime, and constant nudges to buy something. I appreciate that there’s an option to remove ads, but I’d rather just pay a one-time fee for unlimited access. I’ll still download it and see how it plays, though. If it’s fun enough, maybe I’ll spring for the limitless mode.

I like that it combines elements of Scrabble and crosswords, but I need to know if the word lists are actually challenging. Some puzzle games get too easy after a while, which kills the fun. If it has a solid dictionary and lets me push myself, I might actually enjoy this. If it’s too simple, though, I’ll probably get bored fast.

I respect how much personal passion went into this project. It’s rare to see a game where the creator did both the programming and the art. The indie game space needs more projects like this—small, focused, and made with love. I hope it does well so Ponderosa Games can keep making unique experiences like this.
