What Am I made for?
“How to Train Your Dragon” will be released in theaters on June 13, 2025. It is a remake of the animated film series that began with a 2010 animated film, produced by DreamWorks Animation. It is based on the book series by Cressida Cowell and, hopefully, it will continue the original movie’s legacy. ♦ “How to Train Your Dragon“ STORYLINE: Everyone knows that Vikings and dragons have been enemies ever since they realized they live on the same planet, on the same isle. This is why the story of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is so horrendous! He befriended a dragon. No Viking has even done that! It’s unheard of. It’s unacceptable. It’s impossible! Isn’t it? Not impossible for Hiccup. Not only does he befriend the scary Night Fury dragon named Toothless, but he trains the creature! Who does that? Certainly not a Viking! It’s against all the rules of Viking society! But suppose the rules are wrong? Has nobody ever questioned them or even thought to break them? Hiccup defies the tradition of dragon-fighting practices when he chooses to bond with Toothless. Gabriel Howell (DOB: 1st January 1995) is a young British actor who made his acting debut in the short film […]

Do we really need a live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon? The original movies were already visually stunning, and animation allowed for so much creative expression that I don’t see how a live-action version could improve on it. The casting seems decent, but that’s not my biggest concern—my fear is that Hollywood will water down the story, make unnecessary changes, or focus too much on CGI spectacle instead of heart. I’ll keep an open mind, but I’m not convinced this remake is necessary.

I hope this remake leans more into the books by Cressida Cowell. The original animated films were fantastic, but they were a huge departure from the source material. The books had a wilder, more chaotic energy and a very different take on the characters, especially Hiccup. If this version manages to blend the heart of the movies with the spirit of the books, I’ll be thrilled. If not, it’ll just feel like a rehash of something that didn’t need a remake in the first place.

Live-action remakes of animated films rarely capture the magic of the original. We’ve seen this happen with The Lion King, Mulan, and even The Last Airbender—beautiful worlds that just didn’t translate well outside of animation. The original How to Train Your Dragon was a masterpiece, with incredible flight sequences and deeply emotional storytelling. I’m worried this adaptation won’t have the same sense of wonder. If they don’t get Toothless right, the whole film will fall apart.

I don’t understand why they decided to race-swap Astrid. The story is set in a fictional Viking-inspired world based on ancient Scandinavia, where there were no Black Vikings. I get that Hollywood wants to be more inclusive, but historical and cultural consistency matters too. If they wanted more diversity, they could have introduced a new character instead of changing an existing one. It just feels unnecessary and out of place. I’m still curious about the movie, but changes like this make me question whether they’re staying true to the original vision.
