….and you’ll never guess what’s in the lead! We’ve covered several video game awards ceremonies in recent months here at Popgeeks and there seems to be a common critical favorite among them. Astro Bot has been nominated in every category possible, for a total of seven possible wins should it take them all. Black Myth: Wukong also has seven. Animal Well has five. So what makes the Game Developers Choice Awards different from all the others? What it says on the box….this is the one where game developers themselves get to choose the winners. You’d think they’d all just pick their own games, but we suppose that isn’t allowed. If you don’t see your favorites here, the GDCA is the only game awards show we know of to offer a Viewers Choice trophy…and you can vote on what wins it through this link. In the meantime, here’s what’s in competition this year. Best Audio Animal Well (Billy Basso / Bigmode) Astro Bot (Team ASOBI / Sony Interactive Entertainment) Black Myth: Wukong (Game Science) Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (Square Enix) Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 (Ninja Theory / Xbox Game Studios) Honorable Mentions: Balatro (LocalThunk / Playstack), Lorelei and the Laser Eyes […]

I think the Innovation Award is one of the most important categories. It celebrates games that are pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Animal Well, Astro Bot, and Black Myth: Wukong are all deserving nominees. 1 They're all doing something new and exciting. I'm particularly interested in UFO 50. I've heard it's a really unique and experimental game.

I'm always excited to see which game wins Best Debut. It's a chance to discover some hidden gems. This year's nominees are all intriguing. Balatro and Pacific Drive are two games that have caught my eye. I'll definitely be adding them to my wishlist. It’s great to see fresh talent breaking into the industry.

I'm glad to see the Social Impact category recognized. Games can be more than just entertainment; they can tell powerful stories and raise awareness about important issues. 1000xRESIST and Neva are both games that I've heard great things about in terms of their narrative and social commentary. I think it's important to celebrate games that are trying to make a difference.

Seven nominations for Astro Bot? That's a clean sweep waiting to happen. I mean, I've played the game, and it's a masterpiece of platforming. The level design, the controls, the sheer fun of it all – it's all there. I'd be shocked if it didn't win Game of the Year. Black Myth: Wukong looks like a serious contender, too, and I'm interested to see if it can pull off an upset. It’s going to be a close race.
