Conan the Barbarian Joins Mortal Kombat 1 This January 28 Get ready to unleash the Hyborian rage, as Conan the Barbarian is set to join Mortal Kombat 1 on January 28! Fans of the classic sword-and-sorcery icon are in for a treat, as the original version of Conan, portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1982 film, makes his way into the brutal fighting franchise. This marks the second time Schwarzenegger’s likeness has graced the Mortal Kombat series. In Mortal Kombat 11, he lent his iconic image to the Terminator T-800, a character that quickly became a fan favorite. Now, the Austrian Oak’s legendary visage will once again step into the fray, this time as the battle-hardened barbarian that defined his early film career. Conan fights with brute strength, relying on his imposing physique and his ability to wield his signature broadsword. His attacks are long-range thanks to the reach of the sword, and his moves are inspired by and based on his arsenal from the movies. It’s hard to get excited about this when Schwarzenegger isn’t voicing Conan. His voice is just as iconic as his appearance, so replacing it with someone else, no matter how skilled, takes away from the authenticity. That said, I do think the gameplay potential is there. The broadsword and brutal strength are great choices for Mortal Kombat’s combat system. I just can’t help but feel like this is only half of the Conan we know and love. For me, the voice makes the character.

A bull for Conan’s animality? That’s absolutely genius! It captures his raw power and unrelenting nature so well. I can already imagine charging opponents with devastating horn attacks—it’s going to be brutal and so satisfying. I love how Mortal Kombat always finds a way to make these little details stand out and feel meaningful. This is one animality I can’t wait to see in action.

Conan feels like he belongs in the Mortal Kombat universe, and I appreciate that they’re using the classic 1982 version instead of the forgettable reboot. His savage combat style and brutal nature are a perfect fit for the game’s tone. I’m also intrigued by the idea of his animality being a bull—symbolically, it works with his character. I just hope they don’t overplay the nostalgia and actually make him a balanced fighter. Too often, guest characters feel more like fan service than thoughtful additions to the roster.

I think it’s awesome that Conan is coming to MK1, but I probably won’t pick him up. I’m more of a casual player, so I usually just stick with the characters that come with the base game. That said, it’s cool to see Mortal Kombat pulling from classic pop culture like this. I might check out some gameplay videos online just to see his fatalities. Who knows? Maybe I’ll cave and grab the expansion pass if he looks fun enough.
