A Second Season Of The Penguin? Depends On Who You Ask

HBO’s The Penguin, spun off from Matt Reeves’ movie The Batman, was one of the highlights of the 2024 TV year. However, it seemed overall built to be a miniseries, with an overall arc that wrapped itself up neatly in eight episodes. There would be no real reason for a Season Two, storywise. However, we could say the same thing about Shogun, and…. Reeves surprised everyone today by suggesting he’d not only be into making a second season of The Penguin, he’s really looking into it. “Yeah, we’re talking to Lauren about doing another season,” he told Variety in the latest episode of their Directors On Directors series. “Lauren” being Lauren LeFranc, showrunner of the first season. However if you ask LeFranc, “we put it all out on the table” in Season One (as she told the website The Direct) and there wouldn’t be much need for any more, beyond whatever Oz is up to in The Batman Part II. The party member LEAST enthusiastic about more episodes of The Penguin is Colin Farrell, who needed heavy layers of makeup to transform himself into a hobbling obese crime lord. In fact his exact words were “I never want to put […]

I loved the first season of The Penguin, and I think there’s potential for a second season if they explore untapped facets of Gotham’s underworld. The series barely scratched the surface of what Oz’s rise to power could mean for the city. Sure, the first season was wrapped up neatly, but in a world as rich and gritty as Gotham, there are always more stories to tell. If Lauren LeFranc and Matt Reeves find a compelling angle, I’d be all in for another season.

Honestly, I don’t think we need a second season. The first season had a complete arc, and that’s rare in TV these days. Dragging it out could dilute the impact of what they’ve already accomplished. Plus, with The Batman Part II on the way, Oz’s story can continue in a way that feels natural. It’s better to leave people wanting more than to risk overstaying the welcome.

I get Colin Farrell’s hesitation, but I hope he reconsiders. His transformation into the Penguin was so iconic it elevated the character beyond what I ever imagined. If they decide to do another season, maybe they could use flashbacks or a lighter schedule to ease the makeup workload. The show has the potential to delve deeper into Oz’s psyche, his vulnerabilities, and his strengths. I’m rooting for it!

Part of me thinks about shows like Shogun that felt final but still managed to pull off compelling follow-ups. If The Penguin can find that balance, it might be worth pursuing. That said, they’d need a fresh angle—maybe something focusing on Oz’s relationships with other iconic characters.

After reading what Colin Farrell said, I completely understand his reluctance. That kind of physical transformation is grueling, and it’s not fair to expect him to jump back into it unless he’s fully on board. If they do go for a second season, maybe they could minimize the scenes where he’s in full prosthetics. It’s only fair.

From an artistic perspective, I think the show should remain as a single-season masterpiece. Sometimes the beauty of storytelling lies in knowing when to stop. The eight episodes told a powerful, self-contained story. Stretching it further might compromise the vision that made it so impactful in the first place.

This sounds more like a business decision than a creative one. The first season was a hit, and HBO probably sees dollar signs. While I get the financial incentive, it’s a gamble to produce more if the creative team isn’t fully aligned. Quality should come first, but that’s not always how these things work.
