Birth is both an end and a beginning. For newly born creatures it is the beginning of an independent life. However, these same creatures are ending a long gestation period known as pregnancy. For humans, carrying a baby for nine months, and then delivering it safe and sound into this world is a huge accomplishment. Like all species, it begins with conception and a maturation process that procreates new beings. While these nine months of pregnancy may seem long, it does not compare with other species. Many animals dwarf the human experience, ranging from simple worms to giant sea creatures. # 10: Manatees – 13 Months Pregnancy The chubby little sea animal carries its young for 13 months. The manatee mother-to-be spends its time relaxing in the water to gain some relief. A recent report by the Florida Manatee Fact and Information revealed interesting details on these creatures. The report stated that “Manatees reach sexual maturity in 3-5 years (females) and 5-7 years (males) and may live over 65 years in captivity. Gestation is approximately 13 months and usually one calf is born.” #9: Camels – 13 to 15 Months Pregnancy Considered the king of the desert, the camel also remains pregnant for 13 to […]

Woah, 3.5 years for a frilled shark?! That's insane! Imagine being pregnant for longer than high school! Guess those baby sharks gotta come out super strong after all that waiting.

The manatee’s 13-month pregnancy caught my attention. I love that these sea cows spend their time floating around in peaceful solitude as they carry their babies. I was also really impressed by the long gestation periods of the walruses and whales. It makes sense, though. The longer an animal has to prepare its offspring, the better the chances of survival.

This is fascinating! It makes so much sense that larger, more complex animals like elephants and whales need longer pregnancies. Nature's way of giving them a head start! We also need to do more to protect these endangered species with such long gestation periods, like rhinos.

As a new mom, reading about these animals’ pregnancies made me feel a bit more grateful for my own relatively short nine months! Can you imagine carrying a baby for almost two years like an elephant? It really puts things into perspective. I was especially fascinated by how well-developed baby elephants are when born. It’s amazing how nature adapts to the needs of different species. I’m also totally obsessed with whales, so learning about their 17-19 months of gestation made me appreciate them even more. All that time to nurture a baby whale is kind of poetic!

Well, after nine months with my kids, I can't even imagine 22 months with an elephant! Though maybe the extra time would come in handy for teaching them stuff. Like, you know, how NOT to wreck the living room.

I love how the article highlighted different species. It’s wild to think that animals like camels and manatees are pregnant for over a year. I’ve seen manatees up close while kayaking in Florida, and I never would have guessed their gestation period was so long. I always associate the desert with tough living conditions, so learning that camels need up to 15 months to carry their babies is fascinating. It’s incredible how life finds a way to continue despite the harshest environments.

I had no idea some animals could be pregnant for such long periods!
