Godzilla Minus One came out in 2023 and was hailed as one of the greatest kaiju movies ever made. Despite this, and its easy accessibility on Netflix for the past two years, I still haven’t seen the film. The main reason beyond time: I hear it’s depressing. It’s tough to carve out space in my day for an entire movie as it is, but when it’s a SAD movie, my motivation is decreased by at least 80%.

But not everyone is me and plenty of folks had the will to make time for a depressing movie. Godzilla Minus One was a big success for Toho and thus, we have this sequel coming, Godzilla Minus Zero. Don’t count on a trilogy, however. The language from Toho and distributor GKIDS is clear…”There is no third time.”

War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life.

Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant.

The teaser released today isn’t very long, but shows Japanese authorities struggling over how to do away with the King of the Monsters once and for all. Nukes are immediately shot down as an idea, because this is postwar Japan and would YOU feel like it? It’s also pointed out though that Godzilla can survive such an attack — he was borne from radioactivity, after all – so why even bring it up.

According to Toho, Godzilla Minus Zero will again focus on a Japanese family just trying to survive amid the chaos — the same one, to be clear. Survivors of the first film who will return for the second include Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima, Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, Yuki Yamada as Shiro Mizushima, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ota, Miou Tanaka as Tatsuo Hotta, and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Shikishima. Min Tanaka joins the cast as Kanji Murakami, a biologist with “deep psychological scars from the war.”

I love that Godzilla Minus One has set such a high bar for kaiju films! It's exciting to finally see the teaser for Godzilla Minus Zero. The blend of stunning visual effects and practical effects in these films really brings the chaos to life. I'm especially curious about how they'll continue to evolve the story and character of Godzilla after the emotional depth we saw in Minus One. Do you think we might see a more human element or focus on the aftermath of destruction this time around?

The teaser was short, but I think it did what it needed to do. It reminded people what happened before and showed that Japan still hasn't recovered. That makes Godzilla feel like more than just a giant monster. He's part of the country's struggle, and I think that's what made the last movie stand out.

Bringing the original cast back feels like the right move. After everything those characters went through, it would have been disappointing to leave them behind. Their story didn't feel finished, so I'm glad the sequel is continuing instead of starting over.

Hard to believe it's already been a few years since Minus One came out. That movie earned so much praise that expectations for this sequel are naturally high. Hopefully the team wasn't rushing just because the first one was successful.

I loved Minus One, so seeing the same cast return is the biggest reason I'm excited. It feels like the story actually matters instead of just being another monster fight. The line about there being no third time makes it sound like they're planning a real ending. I hope they stick to that instead of changing their minds later if it makes a lot of money.

I actually laughed when they immediately rejected using nuclear weapons. It makes complete sense considering the setting and Japan's history. Even if someone suggested it, everyone already knew it wouldn't solve anything because Godzilla exists because of radiation in the first place. That little exchange felt believable to me.

I wasn't expecting them to continue the same family's story, but I think that's the right choice. If people already cared about those characters in the first movie, it makes sense to finish their journey. A lot of monster movies focus only on the action, so keeping the human side connected should make the ending hit harder.

That final line about everything ending here definitely got my attention. Whether they actually mean it or not, it makes the teaser feel like the stakes are much higher than before. I'm interested to see how they handle Godzilla if this is really supposed to be the conclusion of this story. I just hope they don't reveal too much in the later trailers because I want some surprises left for the theater.
