Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Reveals Itself

Those of you who predicted Square Enix would reveal the third and final game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy at Summer Game Fest were spot on. We instantly went from zero information and not a single screenshot to entire minutes of video and more screens than we know what to do with. They’re calling it Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.

You know who’s not in these screenshots? After ending things on a bizarrely vague note in Rebirth, we’re relieved to report Aerith is NOT, in fact, still alive, nor can she be resurrected by paying for a DLC patch or something (though we suppose the night isn’t over). But you’ll hardly need Aerith and her bonk-stick when you can alternately tear things up as Vincent Valentine. Vincent can turn himself into a monster and slash at enemies ferociously. It’s really gonna make Cait Sith feel inadequate.

The FF7 Remake game has stared linear and gradually become more open, and with this third game, it looks like you’re getting the truly open world you’ve been demanding. Cid Highwind’s High Wind ship is finally controllable, and will let you drop anywhere on the Gaia world map, though Square hasn’t said yet when in the game we gain control of it.

The Weapons have been awakened, and are shown in all their kaiju glory in the trailer. In the original 1997 game, I was never able to defeat a single one of these guys (except the one you’re required to beat). I tried every FAQ suggestion in the book to take down Emerald and Ruby Weapon and could never fell either. Will they be as hard in Revelation? Dunno if today’s mainstream gaming audience would go for that kind of punishment.

FInally, unlike the previous two releases, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is not a Playstation 5 timed exclusive. From Day One, Square promises, you will be able to play it on your machine of choice, no matter what it is…Switch 2, PC, you name it! The game is currently targeted for a Spring 2027 release.
