Fallout: The Roleplaying Game Expands Like A Mushroom Cloud

Modiphus Entertainment created a tabletop RPG version of Bethesda’s Fallout games years ago, and has been supporting their version with expansions ever since. Here’s a roundup of everything that has been introduced recently for Fallout: The Roleplaying Game, as well as what’s coming next.

First is the Gamemaster’s Toolkit, the ultimate guide for Fallout GMs that was previously a print exclusive but is now available in digital PDF form.

  • Digital gaming handouts that make play smoother and decisions easier.
  • Gamemaster PDF booklet with tips and tables that provide answers for the most common gaming questions with help for new and experienced GMs alike.
  • Includes iconic Fallout maps such as the Commonwealth, Wasteland, and Downtown post-nuclear Boston.
  • Printable character sheets makes character creation a breeze for new characters and ‘replacements’.

Next up is the Winter of Atom quest book, announced last spring and due out later this year. We now know a bit more about it:

In the ruins of old Boston, the Commonwealth settles in for a long, deadly winter. As its hungry communities do their best to find food and survive the cold, a new sect of the Church of the Children of Atom arrives. Their flock grows as they spread their worship of nuclear division and radiation across the region. Led by an enigmatic prophet calling himself the Last Son of Atom, the Church’s army plans to ignite an all-out winter war with the settlements that dare reject their atomic god. A group of ragtag survivors must do whatever it takes to protect their communities and keep the Commonwealth from becoming ground zero… again.

  • Face a fearsome sect of the Children of Atom, led by the Last Son of Atom, in an action-packed, open-ended and non-linear sandbox questline that can take characters from level 1 – 21.
  • Meet brand new groups of survivors, from beatniks and circus big tops, to traveling casinos and religious weaponsmiths.
  • Create characters with new origin options: Generation 3 Synths, Protectrons, and Children of Atom.
  • Enhance your game with new rules for surviving the harsh winter and gaining reputation with settlements. Learn how to design balanced combat encounters, and find new rules for surviving

Preorders are now open for Winter of Atom. The previous expansion, Orange Colored Sky, is available now as a PDF:

In this PDF quest for Fallout: The Roleplaying Game, a group of doctors and other caregivers have established a clinic in “Mt. Sin Central,” an ancient hospital in the middle of a ruined city. They offer treatment for ailments of all sorts and Mt. Sin has recently received an influx of chem-addicts who are resistant to the usual forms of medical intervention. The problem is becoming more widespread and the already overworked hospital staff are running on fumes while their supplies are rapidly dwindling. Moreover, the chems involved seem to originate within the territory of a raider gang, which makes fixing the problem even more difficult. The Board of Caregivers have sent out a distress call via Mt. Sin’s Emergency Broadcast beacon. Will you answer their desperate pleas for help?

  • A 22-page adventure in three acts for character levels 6-10.
  • A hospital full of medics and patients in need of help.
  • Locations to explore within the hospital itself and in the surrounding area.
  • Can be placed in any urban landscape in your own games.

But you can also get Fully Operational, an adventure that takes place between Orange Colored Sky and Winter of Atom:

In this digital adventure for Fallout The Roleplaying Game, a former Brotherhood of Steel Scribe has identified the location of a previously-undiscovered West-Tek facility. Rumour has it that they may have been developing prototype Power Armor and other tech, but the site has been lost since the bombs fell. A journey through the Wasteland is likely to be fraught with danger, but this is a prime opportunity for a scavenging run that simply can’t be passed up. You’ll have to head out to investigate, but it had better be worth the risk…

  • A 23-page adventure in three acts for character levels 16-20.
  • An abandoned West-Tek facility to explore.
  • Several departments to scavenge including: Manufacturing, Weapons Testing, and Research and Design.
  • New tech to discover and decisions to be made about its future.

Basically, as long as you can afford the PDFs, you’ll never run out of things to do. All of Modiphus’ expansions for Fallout: The Roleplaying Game are available through their website.

I'm a bit bummed that the Winter of Atom quest book isn't out yet. The story sounds intense with the Last Son of Atom and all. I guess I'll have to be patient, but it's definitely on my wishlist!

Whoa, a new sect of the Children of Atom? That's gonna make for some interesting encounters. I'm curious to see how the ragtag survivors will stand up against them. This questline sounds like a real challenge. New origin options for character creation? Count me in! I can't wait to try out playing as a Generation 3 Synth or a Child of Atom. It'll add a whole new dimension to the game.

It's awesome that Modiphus provides PDF versions of their expansions. It makes it so much easier to access the content and saves shelf space too. Kudos to them for embracing digital formats!

The Winter of Atom questline looks major, but I hope lower-level characters won't find it too challenging. It would be wonderful to have some content created especially to help new players get started. The attention to detail and careful consideration that went into the expansions really impresses me. It appears like Modiphus has a thorough understanding of the Fallout universe and knows how to develop interacting with RPG material.

I'm really excited about the Winter of Atom expansion, but I hope it's not too pricey. Sometimes these expansions can get expensive, and it's important to consider the value for money.
