Evil Dead Rise Comes To Max June 23

If you skipped the theatrical run for Evil Dead Rise, your chance to catch it on streaming is coming in a few days. Warner Bros announced the movie will arrive on Max June 23, viewable for anyone that has a subscription.

Fans of the series were caught a bit off-guard by this installment, which gets rid of the comedic stuff in favor of an all-horror, all-stress all-the-time escapade (don’t expect Bruce Campbell either, he’s retired from playing Ash). It also doesn’t take place in the typically remote Evil Dead setting, choosing to set the story in a city apartment.

It’s at this apartment where estranged siblings Beth and Ellie finally, reluctantly reunite for a day. They’ve never gotten along, but they have no idea how intense the feud is going to get when someone finds a certain old book with an ugly face on it and turns Deadite. Now Ellie is possessed and making repeated attempts at murdering her own children, and it’s up to Beth to keep them away from her instruments of death.

Evil Dead Rise stars stars Lily Sullivan (“I Met a Girl,” “Barkskins”), Alyssa Sutherland (“New Gold Mountain,” “Vikings”), Morgan Davies (“The End,” “Storm Boy”), Gabrielle Echols (“Reminiscence”) and Nell Fisher (“Northspur”). It was written and directed by Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”) and produced by longtime franchise producer Robert Tapert (“Don’t Breathe”). It arrives on Max this Friday, June 23.

I appreciate the creativity and imagination behind the gruesome scenes and gore, I felt that the film took a bit too long to set up the story. The pregnancy subplot felt out of place and could have been better developed. However, once the movie picked up its pace, it became a wild ride of blood and screams. The physical performances and prosthetic makeups were truly impressive. I hope there will be deleted scenes.

Honestly, I just can't imagine watching an 'Evil Dead' movie without Ash Williams. He's the guy played by Bruce Campbell with the chainsaw hand and a lot of funny lines. Ash is like the heart and soul of the franchise. His jokes and crazy actions make the movies super entertaining. So, if there's no Ash, it feels like something important is missing. I know they want to try new things, but I'll stick to the 'Evil Dead' movies where Ash is the star. it's like they took out a major ingredient that made it awesome. I get that they want to try new stuff, but I'll just stick to the 'Evil Dead' movies where Ash is the star. Those are the ones that really get me pumped!

The movie was a relentless onslaught of blood, gore, and violence. The physical performances were impressive, and the prosthetic makeups were incredibly detailed. However, I felt that the story lacked depth, and some scenes felt gratuitously brutal. It's definitely a movie that will rock your socks.

I've always been a fan of the series, and I'm curious to see how this installment differs from the previous ones. It seems like they're going for a more serious and intense tone without the comedic elements. The choice of setting in a city apartment adds an interesting layer to the story. I wonder how the estranged siblings will handle the horrifying situation they find themselves in. I never watched in theaters because I am still afraid of Covid.
