Everything Announced During This Morning’s Nintendo Direct

Early this morning, likely before most of you were awake (on the West Coast anyway), Nintendo released one of two planned Directs…the second will be the bigger of the two, containing desired information on Switch 2, but for now, here’s what’s coming to Switch 1, in order of release.

SaGa Frontier 2 — today
You get a surprise remake of the second SaGa Frontier game effective immediately, courtesy of Square.

Rift of the Necrodancer — today
And the Necrodancer’s latest rhythm game also hit this morning. Crossovers with indie stars like Madeline from Celeste and the guy from Pizza Tower are promised.

Disney Villains: Cursed Cafe — today
So it’s come to this…the “cozy barista” genre has gotten visible enough that there’s a Disney-branded variant of it.

Star Overdrive — April 10

Monument Valley, Monument Valley 2 — April 15

High On Life — May 6

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time — May 21

Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army — June 19

Tamagotchi Plaza — June 27

Patapon 1+2 Replay — July 11

The Wandering Village — July 17

Shadow Labyrinth — July 18
This is that weird “gritty apocalyptic fantasy” take on Pac-Man you first saw in Amazon’s Secret Level series.

We still don’t know exactly when this is arriving.

Metroid Prime 4 Beyond — 2025
We still don’t know exactly when this is arriving either! But the latest trailer promises some new powers and outfits for ol’ Samus.

King of Meat — 2025
Also, no one knows when this meat will happen.

Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots — 2025

Pokemon Legends Z-A — Late 2025
WE got a bit more information here…not much, but enough to know Lumiose City holds a special tournament at night called the Z-A Royale. You must train up during the day so you’re ready foe who you meet at night.

Rhythm Heaven Groove — 2026
If you want to get your groove on, you’ll have to wait a while.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream — 2026
Possibly even longer for the return of the Tomodachis. Game looks as nuts as the first one did.

ALSO: Nintendo‘s leash on digital games will be slightly loosened in the Switch 2 era: it will soon be possible to play digital Switch game cards on two separate systems, as well as allow family and friends to “borrow” digital game cards for a limited time. The change will be effective for both Switch 1 and 2.

Finally, some solid updates! I’ve been dying for more Metroid Prime 4 news, and while they didn’t give us a date, at least we got new footage. Also, Rhythm Heaven Groove? That’s a day-one buy for me, no question. My biggest surprise is Pokemon Legends Z-A—the tournament angle sounds amazing. And wow, Square’s on fire lately with these HD-2D remakes. SaGa Frontier 2 dropping out of nowhere was a nice bonus, too. This was a great Direct, even if we’re still waiting on the big Switch 2 reveal.

Honestly, I wasn’t too impressed. A lot of these games are just remasters and re-releases. I don’t mind nostalgia, but it feels like we’re getting the same games with new coats of paint. Even Metroid Prime 4 barely showed us anything new. The only thing that really caught my eye was Witchbrook—that game has potential. The digital game card borrowing system is nice, but it should’ve been a feature from the start.

I’m really happy with this Direct! Rift of the NecroDancer, The Wandering Village, and Witchbrook? That’s three incredible indie titles right there. Also, Shadow Labyrinth is such a wild idea—Pac-Man in a gritty, apocalyptic setting? I need to see how that plays out. Big-budget games are nice, but this kind of creative indie content is what excites me the most.

Patapon 1+2 Replay and Gradius Origins? You’ve got my attention. It’s nice to see these classics getting another chance on modern hardware. Also, the AI: The Somnium Files series returning is fantastic—I love a good mystery game. Now, if only they’d bring back something like Advance Wars again

Not gonna lie, Disney Villains: Cursed Café looks kind of fun. Cozy games have been my go-to lately, and I love the idea of serving coffee to iconic villains. Tamagotchi Plaza also brings back childhood memories, so I might check that out. Not everything in this Direct was for me, but there’s enough variety to keep things interesting.

I’m thrilled about the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D remake. Square Enix’s take on this style has been phenomenal, and I can’t wait to replay these classics with that visual upgrade. Fantasy Life i also looks promising. Raidou Remastered was a nice surprise too—it’s about time that series got some love again.

Pokémon Legends Z-A sounds like it might shake things up. A tournament format with daily training and nighttime battles? That could be a refreshing change from the usual formula. I just hope they add enough depth to the battle system to make it worth the wait. I’m also curious about Marvel: Cosmic Invasion. If it has a solid multiplayer component, it could be something big.

Monument Valley coming to Switch is such a great choice. Those games are simple but absolutely beautiful. Also, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is something I never expected but totally welcome. The original game was so weird and funny—I hope they keep that energy. Nintendo really knows how to bring back old favorites in a meaningful way.
