Doctor Strange Director Promises Fun, Mind-Bending Film
The next Marvel film has a lot riding on it. As Doctor Strange will not only be the second film of Marvel’s Phase 3, but also, it’s first of a slew of new potential franchise films for Marvel.
Director Scott Derrickson sat down and talked about the film, making sure fans knew that those who loved Doctor Strange comics would feel at home here.
“If your love for the early Stan Lee-Steve Ditko comics was that visual, psychedelic ambition, I think you’ll be pretty satisfied,” he told the Los Angeles Daily News. “The primary resource for the visual design of the whole movie came from those comics.”
Derrickson admitted it took several meetings with Marvel’s Kevin Feige to secure the job of director for the film. However, there was an instant admission among both that Benedict Cumberbatch should be Stephen Strange:
“You feel that he can play the intelligence, the arrogance, the unlikability and yet intrigue of Stephen Strange,” Derrickson explained, “and that the massive arc that the character goes through in those early comics is something that he would be able to portray.”
With Doctor Strange being a not-as-well known character, it’ll be interesting to see how well the film does in its first weekend. The last “new” franchise for Marvel Studios was Ant-Man, which did only $60 million in its opening weekend in the US. Though the film was profitable over, it still served as a lower earnings for the studio overall.
We’ll see if Doctor Strange can do better when the film opens November 4th.
