One of the most common comments I hear about streaming services is, “when are these guys going to just bundle themselves all together and re-form cable TV again?” We’re not exactly at that day, but we’re getting closer. One major hurdle would have to be streamers from other companies getting along, but that hurdle seems to have been cleared. Disney and Warner Bros. were able to shake hands today and agree to offer a bundled subscription that includes Disney+ and Hulu from one company and Max from the other.
“On the heels of the very successful launch of Hulu on Disney+, this new bundle with Max will offer subscribers even more choice and value,” Joe Earley, President of Direct to Consumer at Disney Entertainment, said in a statement. “This incredible new partnership puts subscribers first, giving them access to blockbuster films, originals, and three massive libraries featuring the very best brands and entertainment in streaming today.”
It comes more out of desperation than anything: all the Hollywood studios bet everything on streaming and now they’re deep in debt from spending so much on original content, plus their subscriber bases are all dwindling. We can expect more announcements like this in the months ahead, though the singularity of EVERY service in one bundle is still a distant fantasy.
The bundle is expected to be offered starting this summer; pricing has yet to be explained. We do know both ad-free and ad-filled options will be available. If you end up going for it, do yourself a favor and DON’T buy the cheaper ad tier during an election year. That could get annoying fast.
