“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw” Film Score Composers Revealed

Greg Heffley’s father gave him an ultimatum. He must improve, or his father will send him to a strict military academy. Because of this, Greg must face increasingly ridiculous situations to satisfy his father’s request. Will he overcome these challenges, or will he find himself in boot camp?

We will know the answer on December 5, 2025, when Walt Disney Pictures releases “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw” on Disney+. To bring Heffley’s tale to life, Disney brought back the crew from the 2010 original film, including composers John Paesano and Adam Hochstatter.

Disney also recently released a trailer for the film. Please keep reading to watch it and learn more about the movie.

Paesano and Hochstatter Return to write Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw Score

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw” is the fourth animated adaptation of Jeff Kinney’s “Wimpy Kid” book series. It continues the story of Greg Heffley, a middle-schooler who always seems to find trouble. To make it, Disney brought back the cast from the previous films, as well as composers John Paesano and Adam Hochstatter for the film’s score.

“The Last Straw” features an all-star cast, including Aaron D. Harris, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Erica Cerra, and is directed by Matt Danner. Walt Disney also brought in John Paesano and Adam Hochstatter to write the film’s score.

Paesano previously crafted soundtracks for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, “Daredevil”, and the previous “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” films. Meanwhile, Hochstatter, a frequent Paesano collaborator, joined to provide fresh energy and inventive themes to the franchise. Together, they should bring a timeless, fresh feel to the film’s score that still resonates with younger audiences.

Walt Disney Pictures will release “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw” on Disney+ on December 5, 2025.

Building on the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Legacy

Film music does more than just set the mood. Animated films live and die by it. It guides you through the protagonist’s ups and downs, deepens your emotional connections, and amplifies the comedic moments.

If they can pull it off, Paesano and Hochstatter’s score for “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw” will balance playful motifs with heartfelt introspection, reflecting Greg’s journey.

They certainly think they can. When discussing the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” franchise, Paesano noted that they sought the right balance between comedy and heart for the film. :

They are also both veteran animation composers. So, they are familiar with how animation reacts to music. In an interview about animation, Paesano said:

“Animation gives us a lot of freedom to play with musical themes. We can be bold and quirky, really leaning into the characters’ personalities. For Greg, I use playful motifs and energetic rhythms to highlight his awkwardness and the chaos of middle school.”

The composers noted that they worked closely with Danner and Kinney, who also wrote the adaptation’s screenplay. Together, they tried to ensure the music remained in line with the film’s tone and narrative.

Disney Released a Trailer for the Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw Movie.

Despite its early December release, we only got a trailer for “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw” last week, on November 14, along with a poster. The trailer depicts Greg struggling with his father’s expectations before he gets the ultimatum, revealing that the movie is an adaptation of the third “Wimpy Kid” book.

The trailer begins with Greg narrating the movie’s story as he gets dressed to join his family, who are impatiently waiting in their car. After going through several of Greg’s disasters, the scene switches to a dinner where the family discusses sending Greg to the camp.

After that, the trailer shows Greg and his father going camping, as Greg tries to please his father. This leads to a series of additional accidents before the title card flashes. The trailer ends with Greg trying to plow snow with a lawnmower and one final disaster.

Not bad for a movie made for children. The movie knows its audience, and that’s very respectful.

Other Things to Note About the Film

The trailer’s announcement also revealed the movie’s voice cast and their roles:

  • Aaron D. Harris as Greg Heffley
  • Jude Zarzaur as Rowley Jefferson
  • Chris Diamantopoulos as Frank Heffley
  • Erica Cerra as Susan Heffley
  • Hunter Dillon as Rodrick Heffley
  • Gracen Newton as Manny Heffley
  • William Stanford Davis as Troopmaster Barrett[
  • Ellis Myers as Fregley

Unfortunately, it also revealed some of the changes Disney made to the adaptation. For instance, the movie leans more into the winter setting around Christmas, whereas the book starts at New Year’s and covers several months.

Notable changes include:

  • The movie takes place entirely around Christmas.
  • “The Last Straw is the first animated adaptation released out of series chronological order, and second overall. Disney delayed the third instalment due to production issues and the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes.
  • The film initially had a “Christmas” subtitle.
  • Holly Hills may not appear in the film.
  • “The Last Straw” is the first and only time Harris will star as Greg. He outgrew the role during the delay.

A Fifth Animated Wimpy Kid Movie is Also on The Way

With the release of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw”, the “Wimpy Kid” series became a pair of quadrilogies. However, Disney has already announced that they are making more.

On July 28, 2025, they revealed that they were working on the fifth animated installment, “The Getaway”, for a 2026 release. They were also already on the hunt for Greg’s next actor.

According to their synopsis, “The Gateway” will focus on the Heffley family’s attempts to take a vacation. The movie will retain the Christmas theme, however. It will just take place at a tropical island resort. Matt Danner will reprise his role as director.

I grew up watching the original Wimpy Kid movies, so seeing a new animated version makes a lot of sense to me. Most of the original actors have grown up, so recasting them for live-action would never capture that same energy. Animation allows the filmmakers to stay true to Greg’s awkward and mischievous personality without worrying about age or realism. I think the attempt to recast live-action roles could have backfired because fans are attached to the original actors’ voices and performances. In animation, the new cast has more freedom to bring their own interpretation while keeping the spirit of the characters. Watching the trailer, I could tell they really leaned into the comedy and Greg’s disasters, and the animation style feels like it honors the original films. For someone like me who grew up with the movies, this approach makes it easier to accept the changes and enjoy the story. It keeps the franchise feeling familiar while also refreshing it for a new generation. I’m looking forward to seeing how they handle Greg’s challenges and whether the humor still hits the way it did when I first saw the originals.

I appreciate that the series is continuing to evolve. The fourth installment shows Disney is committed to keeping the franchise alive while trying new things, like the altered timeline and seasonal focus. I like that the trailer still emphasizes Greg’s usual troubles—soccer disasters, camping mishaps, and snow accidents—but the heart of the story is there too. The music team’s reputation makes me confident the film will have the right tone. I plan to watch it on release day and see how the adaptation compares to the books. It feels like a fresh take while staying true to Greg’s character.

The lawnmower scene looked hilarious, and the camping disasters reminded me of my own family trips. I also like that the score is in the hands of people who understand animation. Music can guide how we feel about a character, and in a story like this, it’s especially important. I’m a little concerned about the out-of-order release because the narrative might be confusing, but if handled correctly, it could add a new layer of interest. I’m looking forward to seeing the character dynamics, especially between Greg and his father.
