I grew up watching the original Wimpy Kid movies, so seeing a new animated version makes a lot of sense to me. Most of the original actors have grown up, so recasting them for live-action would never capture that same energy. Animation allows the filmmakers to stay true to Greg’s awkward and mischievous personality without worrying about age or realism. I think the attempt to recast live-action roles could have backfired because fans are attached to the original actors’ voices and performances. In animation, the new cast has more freedom to bring their own interpretation while keeping the spirit of the characters. Watching the trailer, I could tell they really leaned into the comedy and Greg’s disasters, and the animation style feels like it honors the original films. For someone like me who grew up with the movies, this approach makes it easier to accept the changes and enjoy the story. It keeps the franchise feeling familiar while also refreshing it for a new generation. I’m looking forward to seeing how they handle Greg’s challenges and whether the humor still hits the way it did when I first saw the originals.
