There are certain games that many believe don’t need a sequel, or for developers, it’d be incredibly hard to top the first game. Many gamers enjoyed Super Meat Boy, the game by Team Meat that impressed with hundreds of levels and incredibly difficult gameplay. It was great, and the developers knew it and promptly told the world that Super Meat Boy 2 wouldn’t be happening. That was five years ago, and things change in that amount of time. Speaking to Game Informer, Team Meat’s Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes noted that they do have some inspiration to make Super Meat Boy 2, which came from making their upcoming mobile runner game, Super Meat Boy Forever.
“There were aspects of Forever that were moves that Meat Boy did… that we were prototyping that felt like they could be better used in a sequel,” said McMillen. “The future of Meat Boy is definitely up in the air, but a sequel is something that I wouldn’t be opposed to doing even though we both said that we wouldn’t do it.”
If you’re wondering if this is just “wishful thinking,” they swat that down. “We wouldn’t even be mentioning anything about a sequel if we didn’t feel like it was realistic enough,” said McMillen.
While a Super Meat Boy sequel is not yet official, the original Super Meat Boy will arrive on PlayStation 4 and Vita later this fall.
