On August 3, Magpie Games launched the crowdfunding campaign for Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game. Their goal was $50,000, and to put it simply, they’ve busted through that goal so hard that it is now the highest-grossing tabletop RPG campaign in Kickstarter history. It’s so successful that it crossed the $5,000,000 mark last night, which means Magpie has run out of stretch goals to add to the campaign!
They’re not scrambling to come up with more. “We’re still working on several stretch goals through approvals. This process is important and takes a fair bit of time. Viacom is working with us to speed up the process, but it normally takes 10+ days for the process. We’re so grateful they’re working with us to get things moving!” says Magpie. “Our next stretch goal will be at 6 Million! Once we can reveal the details, we will! Stay tuned!” I wouldn’t be surprised if the campaign goes higher than six mil before some of those goals get approved.
Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game covers both existing series (ATLA and Legend of Korra) in one box. The rules are quite deep and better explained on the Kickstarter page, but in basic terms it’s based on the Apocalypse framework. Players invent their own characters, travel through the world and affect the story through their actions. Five known eras are included as potential settings: Kyoshi Era, Roku Era, the Hundred Years’ War (when the new Avatar was frozen), Aang Era and Korra Era. Thanks to the involvement of the creators, canon details about the Avatar World’s past will be revealed for the first time in Avatar Legends.
James Mendez Hodes, who has written scenarios for several other tabletop RPGS including 7th Sea, Scion and Monsterhearts, is leading development on the project. The Avatar RPG will be “easy to learn, flexible, and fun to design in even if you’re new to game design,” according to him.
The lowest tier you can pledge to and receive a physical item is Winged Lemur at $50; you get all unlocked PDF rewards and the core rulebook. The Otter Penguin tier at $75 includes those things plus all physical stretch goals. Polar Bear Dog at $100 gives you the rulebook with an exclusive campaign cover. Finally, Flying Bison sits high at $200 with everything plus special edition dice in a collector’s dice bag.
The core rulebook for Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game will be released this February, with follow-ups and expansions planned for the future. The Kickstarter campaign runs through September 2.
