Anime wasn’t always on top of the world. Let this old timer tell you of an age long ago when that genre was new to America, obscure and confined to the corners of video stores and, largely, to the realm of bootleg VHS tapes with unpaid amateur subtitle attempts. It was undeniably worse than it is now, but there’s a certain appeal to the whole grungy aesthetic of it.
PopSlinger is a new video game from Funky Can Creative inspired by the feel of that underground 90s anime market. Play as Ria and Gin, two Dirty Pair-like heroines armed with soda-shooters who traverse an overhead world of giant monsters (soda pop happens to be their weakness). Bright colors and a fuzzy filter adds to the VHS-ness of the experience.
“PopSlinger started as a small, colorful and very nostalgic idea I had at the beginning of my career as a creator,” says José Luis Abreu of Funky Can Creative. “It has been an amazing journey to take this dream to reality and I am ecstatic that we are able to bring this dreamy, stylish, musical experience to the current generation of platforms and share it to a broader audience. I look forward to people enjoying Ria & Gin’s magical story with the amazing dynamic soundtrack and unique artwork on 4K! This is what PopSlinger was meant to be, please enjoy!”
